http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1139129 I bought this to go camping more often (right now we go maybe once every two years). I had one when I was a kid and loved it! I paid $6000 but that included labor/parts for the guy to fix the engine and get it ready to pass smog (the guy owns his own shop and it has a positive reputation) and at a later date he will do the labor for a new canvas top.
That's cool. Does it have a clutch pedal? The one I almost bought when I was 17 didn't. You just pushed the shifter down while changing gears. Weird?
Lol yes it does have a clutch pedal. To me these campmobiles are about as practical as you can get for camping. Features include: Sink Built in cooler Fold down bed Additional bed up top under the pop up Plenty of storage including a garment closet with mirror A regular 120v outlet Privacy curtains all around A pull out table Overhead lights And lastly on each side of the bus are a screened levoured windows Some models also included a stove
I am totally jealous! I've decided that when I get a classic car for cruise-ins it's going to be something like that. You got it for a steel, I've seen full restored ones with the pop-up roof go for >$25k.
Yeah the vanagon's which are the newer versions of this bus have a water cooled engine and they go for ridiculous amounts! http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifi...=&yearfrom=&yearto=&pricefrom=&priceto=&model[]=1968-up+Bus+-+Camper§ion[]=55&wanted=show&zip=95620&zipdist=500&state[]=&usaregion=&country=&sort=date&sort_order=DESC&submitButton=Search I don't know enough about the vanagon to explain why some can be had for under 10k while others are 15k+
I'd rather have the westfalia anyday. I believe I'd yank the brain and fuel injection and throw a weber carb on it though. I did that to an old problematic squareback and all the problems went away. I got 32 MPG and no worries about nuking the brain ever again.
Yeah, the one I saw was red and PRISTINE. Not even sure what year it was, but it was fetching upwards of $20k, up at the Volo car museum North of Chicago.
Nice find. Too bad about the smog I hate that stuff and would always find an exempt model. My roommate has owned tons of these over the years and adds: The motor is a 914 motor (same injection from the Porsche too). No way I'd switch to carbs... Efi will get much better mileage and have more consistent power. And smog will be a lot easier.
