How can you tell if a brand new cpu is dead?

I purchased a bunch of parts from newegg to build a system for the office I work at, apon receiving it I put it all together only to have it not post. And when I say it wouldn't post I mean the only thing it did was turn on the system fans (cpu fan as well). No beeps, no screen, nothing!

So I called the mobo manufacture and ran through some steps, nothing worked, so I rma'ed. I received it back today and the shit still doesn't work and on the paper work it says they couldn't reproduce the error.

So now I'm here past the 30 return period with a non working system:|

I have no other cpu's to test it with (it's a Intel Pentium 4 631 Cedar Mill 800MHz FSB 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 EM64T) the system is an ASUS Pundit-PH3 Intel Socket T(LGA775)).

How can I tell if it's due to a faulty cpu or a faulty motherboard? Wouldn't a bad cpu at least allow the motherboard to make some beep sounds?

    Nevermind, it's the fucken cpu:mad:

Unlike other components when the cpu is dead the motherboard powers up but that's as far as it gets.

Thanks asus for figuring out that one, NOT!!

So you can RMA the CPU, right? The retail box CPUs have a pretty good warranty as I recall.

I'm just assuming it's the cpu, I can't imagine asus being that stupid and saying my system is fine when it really isn't. Besides, all the searching I have done has lead to a dead cpu as the culprit.

I can rma the cpu but that will just mean more time spent on this thing and more money spent on it that I'm not giong to get reimbursed for:|

Not reimbursed? Why not, if it's for the office?

I get paid monthly and for products because I chose to build this as opposed to buying an oem, it's on me:(

So I called asus again and one of the first questions they ask me is what model is the cpu. I tell him and he says it's not compatible (it's an lga775 631) and he tells me the 630 is (which is exactly like the 631 except it's 90nm as opposed to 65nm). Needless to say I was pissed since neweggs sites says the board is compatible with lga775 cpu's.

So I called newegg and they are going to allow me to return it but now I'm out more shipping:|

Thank god I know to always call back for a second opinion (why I didn't do that the first time I don't know).

Newegg should eat the shipping to them, and Asus should eat the shipping to them. They both fucked up. I would call their customer support people, the techs won't be able to help.

That sucks... this is why i stear clear from intel sometimes... they get very complicated with their processors and it just becomes a big headache to me.

In this case though, it's an asus issue. For whatever reason their board was not compatible with a 65nm chip but the same 90nm chip works fine, wtf!?

Chipset issue. I always buy acording to the chipset and research the compatability extensively. But I know sooner or later what happened to you, will happen to me. It's not a question of "if" but a question of "when".

That's the exact board I have and I'm very pleased with it. I will, however, be upgrading to one with PCIe and multicore technology in the near future. If they made this board with those requirement of mine, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
