Today marks 65 years since we changed the world forever (for better or worse). May the innocent lives that were lost rest in peace, and I hope the world never sees that kind of destruction again. also, the US will be attending the ceremony for the first time ever. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-10888571
It was unfortunate, but it's important to not forget who began that conflict and how. I wish were as strong and unified now as we were in 1945.
It is worth mentioning the daythat lives in infamy. However, pearl harbor has a very important distinction from Hiroshima. Pearl harbor was a military target, and while they did sucker punch us, it's not like they bombed an entire thriving city full of citizens, including women and children whose only crime was to be living in our enemies country. Anyway those are the people I mourn. I can't say one way or another wether the bomb was justified, but I think it's important to remember the innocents.
Oh yeah, absolutely. And there's quite a bit of evidence that they were about to surrender anyway and we dropped the bomb as both a test and a way to "enhance" the negotiations. But I just have a hard time feeling too guilty about it. All those poor people in Nanking need to be remembered too.
It really is amazing it has taken our country so long to actually attend this important ceremony... My feeling on the bombing is that it was a clear war-crime, just like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Tokyo , which killed 100,000 people as well. However it is easy to argue it "ended the war" and that it "worked" (despite what MSP already mentioned), and after all, we were the winners, so our nation was not going to be punished. Only those who lost who are punished for their wrongs in war.
We needed to drop it somewhere to anounce to the world: "fuck you, we're top dawg now!" The war was already won, look where we went since then.
