I was so hesitant to get this OS, but I did.. and it's actually quite amazing. System performance is actually FASTER (at least on my PC) than XP. I've only been on it about 20 minutes so I haven't even dove into everything yet. Speech recognition is sweeeeet, definitely for the lazy but still sweet. The new Alt-Tab is awesome. Very flashy but extremely useful. I'll post more with detailed descriptions, pictures, and a better review in a bit. Sweet!
cool, also post your system specs too. have you tried any games? any problems with drivers or programs? thanks for the info!
working good so far. Got all my drivers installed. AIM, Firefox, Azureus, Winamp, etc., all working fine. installed steam and played a little 1.6 and source. Runs fine for me, and I have the Aero and glass crap turned on as well. System Specs: AMD Athlon XP 2500+M @ 2.3Ghz 1GB DDR-400 PC-3200 Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB Not the best system specs in the world anymore but I'm still surprised at how well it runs. -Chris
hmm interesting, I've heard mixed reactions about the ammount of memory to have. also, i've hard that games run considerably slower. thanks for the info though. by the way, did you buy it or "aquire" it?
They do feel a tiny bit slower, that much I'll admit. The Aero stuff (like Hidious said) does eat a crap ton of resources, so if you're a gamer you already know what to do, Windows Classic! Bluetooth drivers for my phone installed no problem. I'm gonna give it a few days of messing around and trying some stuff out before I make my "final" judgement, but so far I'm impressed.
ya i'm not even lookin to install vista on my gaming machine anytime soon anyways, just on my main desktop, which doesn't even have a true video card anyways. No Aero for me!
hmm... it runs descent for ya? i got the same year era hardware as you and i would suppose vista with the eye candy would be horrid. so how many different hardware configurations can we have with vista before it becomes a dead activation?
I dont play games on my pc, use it for music/browsing. Gonna dive into vista probably this weekend, when i have some time to do some formatting and cleaning up of my hard drives.
Uh oh, now we just need the Linux kids in here.. Just kidding Based on the Anandtech benchmarks, application performance is basically the same between XP and Vista (unless I read the entire article wrong ). I can agree, as far as the feel of it. The only problem I've encountered has been with WinRAR. I tried unpacking an Xbox game ISO and it gave me some "you're not the owner of this blah blah" type of thing. Maybe my first experience with the new anti-piracy crap? Other than that, I've installed all of my programs with no problems and am doing everything just like I was in XP. Maybe I'm so impressed 'cause I thought this would be like installing XP on a K6/2.
so all of you guys actually bought it? if so, im impressed. it all comes down to drivers.. chipset drivers, network drivers, sound and video are the main ones to improve performance.. the os JUST came out, you cant expect developers to crank out supar drivers just yet.. alot of people are just impatient.. but then again im not a driver developer so i really have no clue about how long it should take.
I tried the home premium tonight on my desktop, ran the hardware analyzer and it said mostly everything would be ok. So i install it on a spare hardrive i had, and I find out that none of my goddamn nforce 1 devices are installed. The OS was very very nice looking, installation was smooth and I really liked the new menu system, quite nice indeed. But when I tried to goto nvidia's site to find drivers, there was nothing for vista for nforce 1... needless to say, I was pretty fucking pissed, apparently nforce 2 is also NOT supported, and as far as I know, there are alot of people with this chipset. I think the worst thing is just not being able to have ethernet drivers, I can't even browse the web. You'd think by now, they would be able to write a generic driver that would give you just basic ethernet access, but after all this time they don't. Wouldn't be surprised if nvidia is teaming with microsoft to help force people to upgrade. meh...
My Asus A7N8X-E is nForce 2. Internet worked right from the install, before installing any drivers. I still got the nF2 network/sound pack from the nVidia site, though.
Windows XP drivers should work fine. I was using XP drivers for my sound card on Vista. It may give you a warning but it should work.
That could be possible too, I remember when a certain geforce driver would complain that SLI was activated but there was no 2nd videocard. When you clicked on the bubble in the bottom right corner it would lead you to a SLI Nvidia site.
This is my first post using speech recognition. This is insanely useful and futuristic. I can't believe how well it picks up my own words.
Actually, they've shown that Aero doesn't affect game speed at all (due to Vista's intelligent handling of Aero when games are running -- it turns the features off during gameplay), and the slowdowns are almost entirely due to barely-ready-for-prime-time drivers from AMD/ATI and nvidia, who've only managed to get their drivers stable for now, and will be working on improving their performance from here on out. In the end, they're predicting that the drivers will eventually be as fast as their XP counterparts.
For the people that bought it and listen to alot of downloaded(not purchased) music....good luck with the DRM shit.
Ive moved, added, and listened to my WinAmp playlist many times now and nothing has happened. No errors or warnings.
