I just recently filled up my desktop's harddrive to around 90% capacity while backing up some stuff and things really started to slow down. And then I was having a bitch of a time copying files from my desktop to my external drive. I restarted in safe mode and managed to get the files copied over without incident. That done I decided it was time to format. I went the Ubuntu route this time, just for variety. Anyhow, I got it installed and checked the disk utility to see what I could find, heres what came up: Is it on it's way out? Damn thing is probably only a couple years old.
Once a few sectors start going bad, soon MANY sectors will start going bad. Back up everything off that drive immediately or sooner, and replace it instantly! My Samsung started doing that, and it died a grizzly death of major shrinkage, just about RIGHT after I copied my data over to a new drive.
Heh, I went to WD's website to download their little HD checking app, and while it was downloading my screen just turned off (ie the video signal disappeared). Everything was still running, just no video. I hit reset and no sooner did it get booted up than the video disappeared again. I have to assume this is just a symptom of the same problem. In any case, I salvaged what I wanted *phew*. Fortunately boxing day is coming up and I have a laptop to use in the meanwhile.
i had a smart error with one of my seagate hard drives a month ago, filled out their little form online and sent it in under warranty and got it replaced fairly quick and for free. is the hd still under warranty?
Turns out it is still under warranty (3 years w00t). I had assumed it would be a 1 year warranty at best.
