Green Workshop - Natural Living. (pix galore)

I finished the framing, got the rest of the purlins on, the closure moldings on, the furrings on, and the roof and two sides covered today:

all tghat is left, is to install shelving and run power for the tghermostaically controlled fan for the venting and water for the drip system. It is now a functioning greenhouse. i put my peach tree seedlings in there to give them a bit more time before they shed all of thier leaves for the winter.

All in all, the garden's going to be much bigger next year. I may try to start some tomatoes next week and see if they'll grow without having to heat the greenhouse.

it sure is warmer inside than outside the greenhouse. Like today the sun was out and it was 45f ambient. Inside the greenhouse it was over 80f. On a cloudy day the range is 45f/65f.

But this is the best thing done so far: wood heat!



The days have been cold and the nights right around freezing. That little stove puts out the most relaxing heat posible on this planet. When burning well seasoned wood, (oak, cherry and fir) this little stove puts out very few emisions.

I've been in a lull lately and haven't indulged in many projects. But yesterday I was down at the creek and it's back up from being low in the summer. The moving water inspired me and a micro hydro project may be in the works soon. :unibrow:

I got off my butt and scrapped together a computer for the shop today!! Complete with wireless access. No more
running back and forth to the house to check specs and stuff :unibrow:.

I could say that i wouldn't have such a big mess if i had a bigger shop. But then I'd be lying......I'd just have a bigger mess.

Got the planting started this week. I have peas, garlic, onions and 2 types of spuds in thus far. I'm watching this new garden space fill up extreemly fast. I've yet to spread compost and till the orchard where I'm planting the winter squashes and herbs (not h-e-r-b). Then till up a constantly wet-from-underground-spring spot for 2 varieties of tobaco.
The grapes are budding out and are looking promissing. Though this year, the electric fence goes up (solar, of course http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47454). Gotta keep those pesky coons from gorging on my grapes somehow. max will only touch the wires once. Once was all it took for him to leave those huge turkey birds alone.

Wow, that's a good amount of food you are producing there.

I have to utilize the orchard for all the winter squashes I'm going to grow. The tobacco is going up there too. I just spread three yards of aged poop up there yesterday. wqe just had a few days of good rain so it was too moist to till....I'll get to that in a couple of days when it dries out a bit. I've been eyeballing a second garden plot to double what we have this year for next season already. We grew enough for 7 months of veggies last year, shooting for a whole years worth coupled with a higher percentage of vegetables in our diet this go around. I love this stuff!
After the veggy starts are out of the greenhouse, there'll be space in there to grow tomatoes, peppers and other stuff longer.

Your yard is beautiful Wiskas. I really dig your greenhouse. I am putting a little 4x2 on the side of the house or garage in the next few days to keep our tomatoes and peppers in. The south side of our house is overflowing with plants right now. All the tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and a ton of flowers Taya has started for the yard. I was wondering about putting a little thermostat contolled heater in the greenhouse to keep the cool temps out for the next little while. It looks like it is still getting down to just above freezing some nights. Any tips?

A little ceramic heater would work well. i'm trying to come up with some sort of way to use waste heat from my flue pipe to heat the greenhouse for this winter. I hate the thought of having to use the electricity on that 10'X12' greenhouse, but I'd kinda dig tomatoes year round.
I look at the heat coming out of the top of that pipe and think: "what a waste of heat". I'm thinking some sort of passive water heater done with copper coils pushing hot water out to the greenhouse hooked into some sort of radiator.

PS: that's the yard my dad and mom built. it takes a bit of labor to maintain, but it's well worth it.

Wow Wiskas, that greenhouse is the shit! I'd love to have something like that but my properly doesn't really get enough sunlight.

Damn! That looks like some private park or something, very clean and very green, nice!

The grass looks so soft too, some day when I get around to re-landscaping my house that will be the type of grass I want.

That's what I'm talking about Miller, just like that. i see all those heat waves exiting the flue pipe and it drives me nuts. At the very least, I'm going to relocate the shop woodstove to the greenhouse
because, let's face it, homegrown ripe tomatoes in the middle of winter iz the shit! :unibrow:
That field takes 6 hours to mow with a 42" mower, then another three hours to blow into piles and rake. so far it's been three times this year and by the time next week gets here, it'll be ready to mow again.
