    When it comes to PSUs, there's no compromising. You have to go with good reputable brand, and there are 4 that are considered the best in business. Other may be good too, after you have put in time researching them thoroughly. Even if the system is low end, those company also make good low wattage psu for low end system.

    PFC = power factor correction?

    not 100% up to date on current ATX technology, but what is the purpose of them?

    interesting. it would seem i've only ever had units with passive or no PFC at all.

    kind of want to open up the two i have laying around now, but they do seem to be decently built, so i'm not sure what all i would be accomplishing.

    So, what power supply brands does everyone reccomend. I know for entry-level power supplies I always end up reccomending Antec brand PSUs, particualarly the "EarthWatts" models

    Seasonic is considered a top tier power supply company, lots of other great brands/models are just re-branded seasonic power supplies. PC Power and Cooling use to be considered one of the best PSUs but they were bought out by OCZ a while back, I am sure they are still great but I can't comment on it.

    See if this guy reviewed a power supply you want to buy:

    He does some extremely in depth PSU reviews.

    y'all got me scared about my unit so i had to look it up....

    585 watt rating, but adding up the voltage/amperage on the side comes out to over 750?

    has had coil whine for a long time, but all of the reviews on newegg seem to indicate that it can handle at least what it's rated for. had a couple of brownouts with it and it still kept the computer running as well, so i'm impressed.

    I bought what I thought was a decent brand (Antec) and had to RMA it within 9 months for a noisy fan. Thanks for the tip Ali, I'll look at Seasonic next time.

    I use an Antec with my main system because it was specifically designed to fit my case, my other systems use SeaSonic. Check out this site http://www.silentpcreview.com/
