Long story short, the gf has a blockbuster online account and I want to rip The Prestige, Casino Royale and some other movies.

I used to use AutoGK and DvD Decrypter but they're both being le suck at the moment. So I figured I'd ask here what ripping methods you all use. I'd preferably like to rip to XVid if possible.

I've been ripping with DVD Decrypter and converting to AVI with the Pro version of DIVX. It's simple, and works well.

Any dvd and dvdshrink for the win! Ripping and re-encoding all in one shot, assuming you want the movies in dvd format.

DVDFab platinum works the best for me (even better than any dvd and dvdshrink)

I'll have to check that out. How long does it take to do a dvd backup?

If it has to shrink it 30-50mins depending on the movie. That's on my Sempron 3000 @ stock.

    EDIT: DVDSHRINK does.

5-10 minutes for movies, i usually blow away the menus, and featured and just burn the movie

10-20 minutes for tv dvd's like Seinfeld and stuff, in which i keep everything just shrink the disc.

it took about double those times on my old comp, maybe more.

I've burned over 1,000 dvd's, and those three programs are all i've ever used

I would assume it would be roughly the same times, if not quicker.

Okay, I'm a newb at this stuff. Does the brand of disc matter much? Would you opt for the high, low or medium quality stuff? Also +R or -R?
