So time to revisit this topic, what's everyone using? I'm trying to grab an uncompressed ISO of Inception, and the studio is using some insidious copy protection on this disc. DVD Shrink, DVD Decrpter, and DVD Fab 8 have all been thwarted...
When I run into things I can't rip it's usually just a matter of updating to the latest version of AnyDVD.
What are you talking about? The only thing I have problems with when it comes to DVDs and Bluray are Disney flicks. Otherwise DVDFab works awesome!
I used to use Handbrake for the longest time (it's multi-platform and a perfect balance of features/usability), but I haven't really needed to rip DVDs anymore since I started using Netflix. I have a huge digital movie collection that I never touch, so why bother? And DVD security? WTF? Pretty sure most decent programs can bypass that.
I have Netflix also, and make copies of all of my incoming movies. And using my WD TV Live can play them back in my movie room, it's pretty slick. I might try Handbrake, looking for something that will make a perfect uncompressed ISO and include the DVD menu structure.
I must suck at using handbrake cuz I've tried it in the past and it either crashes or make a shitty file.
You have to set up handbrake correctly. I had the same problem forever until I read up on proper configuration depending on the media you are ripping and what you are trying to accomplish. I just started ripping my DVD/BR library using Handbrake so I'm a bit of a noob. If you think I'm doing it wrong, please speak up. I usually use it to rip to an MKV container with H.264 video stream. FPS set to "Same as source", Quality "Constant" with a quantizer of 15. For audio I use 2 tracks. First track is AC3 5.1 at AAC/Dolby Pro Logic II with a samplerate of 48 and bitrate of 160. The second track is set for either 5.1 AC3/DTS Passthru, whatever the highest quality available is. I don't usually include subtitles and havent messed much with the "advanced" tab. Edit: MSP for straight Rips I use MacTheRipper but that doesn't really help you.
MakeMKV. Just dumps the selected contents into an mkv file. No transcoding. Also free while in beta, which it's been in forever.
