Your hard drive is failing. Backup your data, NOW.

Definitely sounds like a HDD on the fritz. You should backup all critical data and run a DFT (drive fitness test). See the thread on this forum that's stickied (essential computer geek tools) for the download link to Ultimate Boot CD.

My Maxtor is doing the same thing. I'm so lazy, that I'm just gonna wait to see if it dies. It probably will, in which case I'll lose everything on my data drive to get an OS back up, but w/e

The read/write head of probably wearing out. This is normal for disk drives, they all die eventually, some quicker than others.

Chris, just split some free space off the partition on the data drive to install the OS so you don't have to lose your shit!

I hate that sound! It's definately HDD and it's cost me alot of data loss. Unfortunately, for me, it was usually too late to backup my stuff when the
    "clicking" entered my life.

Yup, I find that every single western digital drive I've purchased has done that. I lost a lot of good porn and music over the years. I guess I shouldn't have just ignored the clicking. :)
