I have a system I'm working with that is running xp home and when you use the fast user switching function the newly logged in user cannot access the cd drives. Is this normal behavior for xp? All users are administrators.
Does the drive show up under 'my computer'? You don't have to be an admin on a system to use the CD, unless you are trying to install something. Do this, log in with an account that the CD works under and delete the profile for the one that isn't working and have that person log on again. Also, check the hardware profile when logged on and make sure "disable for this profile" isn't checked for the CD.
Unfortunately I couldn't delete the profiles because they had too much shit saved all over the place. The cd roms also were not available (they did show up in my computer) no matter who logged in first or second, whoever logged in second got denied access.
It almost sounds like Windows locks the drive if there is a CD in it because it keeps everything running in the background when you switch. If present, take the CD out of the drive. I did some research and came up with nothing. I have never seen this issue. NOTE: You can rename a profile under documents and setting and WIndows will create another one when the user logs in, and you won't lose any data, though you'll need to copy it over to the new profile.
