AMD? You would get more bang for your buck with Intel at this point. I would recomment a Conroe 6300 ($181), a decent single PCI-Ex16 motherboard (about $100), 2GB of DDR2 ($200), an entry level Nvidia 7600 ($100-125), and a cheap PSU. You're slightly over budget with that rig, but you could get by with 1GB of DDR2 for now. At $600 for the build you're going to have to make some sacrifices. But that Conroe 6300 will go toe-to-toe with the best AMD has to offer, and you'd have a decent upgrade path.

It may cost $60-70 less than the Core Duo, but check out how they compare (the red bars). The chart is interactive so you can play around to see how they stack up in many applications.

There was a time, not too long ago, that I thought I'd never hear computer guys saying any Intel chips were better than AMD.

No doubt! In fact most of my stuff at home is AMD. But the current generation of Intel is a hammer blow - even the low end Intel stuff can generally out-gun anything in the AMD lineup. And the older San Diego stuff? Ouch! I hope AMD gets their act together soon, we need the competition to keep prices down.
