I've acquired a broken ps3 that suffers from the red light of death. When you turn on the power it beeps twice and then shuts down.

Does anyone know how to fix this? There are a ton of "repair kits" out there but I'm very skeptical of them.

I believe it's the original model made in july 2007.

I currently have it taken apart so I just need to do what ever needs to be done with it.

There's plenty of videos on youtube, I think you will probably already have all the right gear minus a heatgun. Just search for "YLOD" on youtube.

I've seen them but I guess my confusion is what exactly is my error? Is it red light of death or is it yellow?

I'm not an expert on it, I think you have the YLOD. I had the exact same issue with my PS3. I didn't actually fix it myself, I found a shop who specialised in just fixing Xbox 360's and PS3. It just goes to show how faulty both consoles were eh.

In my case I believe they fixed it using the methods found on youtube. This is the video they show on there website

Because they are professionals or something they were able to put a warranty void sticker on it again. So I got my data of it and traded it for a new design PS3.

    I fixed it!!

All I needed was a heat gun and some thermal paste.

    Damn I'm good!

I had this an my 40GB 1st gen. Left it on for the weekend paused on COD4 and I guess it overheated. It was still under warranty so I didi the RMA stuff and they sent the box. A few days later the box arrived but it fixed itself. I guess letting it sit for 3 days gave it time to cool and the paste to rebond or something. I still use that PS3 today.
