An interesting thing happened at work today. For those who don't know I work at a student position in the IT department of a local Waterbury, CT university. In the morning an AT&T tech walks into our office, informing us that they're here for a residential DSL installation. It turns out that one of the residents had decided to call AT&T up and order DSL for their room. We ended up just telling them that the installation would not be able to authorize and the student is being notified as well. I was surely surprised to see that happen.
I'm not surprised at all. We've had this sort of thing happen at some of our manufacturing facilities. You'll get a local business manager or sub-manager tired of dealing with corporate restrictions and try to go it on their own. Never ends well.
Oh yeah! We have whole factories, groups of factories that try to break away from the corporate IT infrastructure. It's funny because eventually the wheels start coming off the cart and they ask us for help. It's brutal.
