I have been running this router for a year or so on DD-WRT no problem and one day it just doesn't work anymore, reset button and leaving it unplugged isn't doing anything. Isn't responding to the ip address... Wat do? If it is junk anybody recommend another router? They just don't seem to last for me.
Try the 30/30/30 reset: http://compnetworking.about.com/b/2009/03/11/the-30-30-30-hard-reset-rule-for-routers.htm If that does not work, that router should have a restore button that is worth a shot using. Follow steps 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 here under install instructions: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N12
the firmware restoration utility wont detect the router which is in restoration mode, power light cycling on and off D: Looks like a nifty router, looks like you can plug in a usb hard drive and have a network drive right? May be cool to pick one of those up and get a external hard drive on black friday. I have killed ~3 linksys routers since about 2007. Maybe I overwork them running torrents 24/7? I liked the asus router before it died... maybe i need to get a router that is a little more powerful.
Oh yeah, that router is the shit. NAS functionality is a breeze, and there are two USB ports. Two USB hard drives, or a USB hard drive and a USB printer. Rock solid, simple, I love it... Picked it up on sale at NewEgg for $69 shipped!
I used to be a big Linksys fan, but my last router basically cured me of that. I had an entry level N model, the E1000 I think, and it was an unreliable sack of crap. I had to reboot it at least once a week. It was the router that basically drove me to research things and ultimately buy the Asus. I think Netgear is still making good stuff though.
I've got the RT-N56U. Pretty slick beast. But it's funny how my requirements changed and probably could have gone for some a little less. But the black diamond finish on it looks good in my black entertainment center.
So I got the RT-N16 set up... the asus download manager sucks, you can download torrents but they will not seed so it makes it kind of worthless. I installed tomato-usb firmware on it which is supposed to be able to get the router to run torrents in a convoluted way, it is a work in progress. I managed to unbrick the RT-N12 and switched it to repeater and set it up in my garage so I have great signal all over my property.
Bummer dude. Can't say I've ever tried the torrent capability on mine, I rarely use torrent these days.
