Well, it happened. My gf got her iPhone stolen lastnight. She managed to forget it on the back of the couch in the lobby of her apartment complex. I don't blame her, though. She put it in a spot where she couldn't see it when she was putting her shoes back on (she was skating around). She said it had a pretty low charge on it when she last looked. I tried calling it as soon as she found out, and it went straight to voice mail. I'm figuring whoever stole it probably played with the fucker until it died. We went to an AT&T store and had them disable the phone. She's out $200, can't afford a new phone (just renewed her contract like 3 months ago, would have to pay full price.. she's already eating ramen to get by), and doesn't have a SIM(M?) card anymore. What can she do? She has her old phone, just no card. Stupid her, she never put a security lock on it, meaning anyone could have had access to her school email + personal email, aim account, networking sites, netflix, etc. I'm going to tell her to change all of her pw's pronto when she gets back from work. Man. The worst part of it, is aside from not being able to contact her at all, with the exception of her getting home and going online, is that her apartment complex uses a gate system, which calls her phone to let me in. Needless to say, on top of this, it screwed up her ability to be able to get her car fixed up (we were running out to go drop it off this morning), as well as our planned trip to Canada. She can no longer go because it's such a goddamn money-suck. I really don't know what I'm asking about. Maybe some suggestions on what way to go about fixing this.
Agreed. It sucks for sure but hell I can afford an iphone but there's no way I'd pay that kind of money if I'm already scraping by.
Had money at the time. She's on a family plan with her parents, too. Not like she's paying that ridiculous everything plan that you have to get with the iPhone. It's also mainly because it was at the beginning of the year, and the toll of working only on weekends hadn't hit yet. To boot, she works for the apartment complex, cleaning for free rent, on top of going to school.
if she has an old phone, just go to the at&t store and get a new SIM card. I think they charge $10 for one. That's the quickest and cheapest thing to do now. Did she not have insurance on her phone? For having such a nice phone, she should had gotten the insurance too...
Go to a Corp AT&T store with the old phone and they will give you a sim card for free. If she isn't a authorized user then she will have to have her parents activate the card. Giving the rep the old phones imei will allow you to remove the $30 iPhone feature. I'd have change all her passwords to something new.
Cool to know, ivwshane. She was sleuthing craigslist just now and found someone who posted a used 3G iPhone for like 200. Hrm. Contacted.
ebay, craigslist and iphone forums are the best places to find a used replacement. forums are really good because people are willing to let them go far cheaper than what you would pay on ebay or retail
Haha, exactly my plan. The guy got back to me. I don't believe it's hers. If it were stolen, it wouldn't come with the accessories. He said it comes with everything. What made this dude a suspect to me is that he left his email in the Craigslist description, and his last name matches a resident in the apartment complex. I was really hoping this guy was a son or a brother to whoever lived there. But it ends up that he lives on the complete opposite side of town and goes to HS there, making it less of a possibility.
fucking thieving piece of shits. i got nuegps installed on my phone. so if i lose it or it gets stolen, i send a text message to my phone and it reports back its gps coordinates for mapping. its actually burned into the rom, so even if they reset the phone or do a hard reset, its still in there. it turns on the gps and reports back.. such a convienient tool i think iphone might have an app for that, not sure. just something to think about next time. theres also a wm app called remotetracker which i heard is better.. get something like that installed for your girls next phone theres also sim card change apps where, if, the sim card is swapped a txt is sent to another phone telling you and giving gps coord
Do your networks BAR the serial numbers of lost and stolen phones? Its always a little win when your phone is lost or stolen; You know that no one else can make use or make money out of your bad luck. Yes I know there is s/ware to change the IMEI, but, hopefully not for the Iphone. This s/ware is illegal in the UK and carries prison time if proved using it. If you do try to buy the phone from the guy you contacted. Ask him if you can have a play with the phone and then tap in to the key pad *#06# it will show the IMEI, which you can compare with your girlfriend's stolen phone IMEI. It is something to check anytime you buy a 2nd hand phone as it might be a dodgy phone. Some smartarses will change the IMEI sticker in the back of the phone, but, 99 times out of 100 the internal / actual IMEI will not be changed and you can check to see if they are different.
No, the phone won't be bricked. As far as AT&T is concerned, it's another customer getting a new phone And yeah, Torx. I saw some apps like that. I just wish I had known about them before this all went down. Oh well. I guess she'll have to wait until Monday to do anything. Her weekend job is during any sort of hours that the AT&T store may be opened for.
why don't people get insurance on a 500$ phone so when shit like this happens you can get a new one for 50$.............
Yeah, it's only Applecare. And guess what Applecare doesn't protect against? Not only theft/lost devices, but broken screens. You drop your iPhone? Either pony up for another one or go to a cheap phone.
Little bumpy-bump AT&T is charging her because (snicker) the guy who stole it called someone in Yemen. Number: 09674421243
They wont waive that? Has she called yemen or text yemen before? Att normally will do a one time courtesy credit, especially if you called in to have it suspended once you found out it was stolen.
