As in, I'm thinking of buying one. It's my understanding that VWs are a touch more reliable these days. Anybody ready to tell me I'm making a horrible mistake?
My roommate has an 07 I think Fahrenheit. We flashed it. That thing is very quick. Well built and looks decent. Gets good gas mileage etc. really classy for a cheapish car. I haven't driven it yet.
I don't see anything wrong with a Golf TDI if you're just looking for 'some car'. Seems like the most logical choice!
the only thing hatchbacks are good for is throwing a single 10" sub back there in a ported box and it'll sound like 10 12"s banging.

Ohhh tdi. I was thinking gti. Tdi won't be as exciting or fun. But the diesel is more reliable and obviously better mileage
My cousin's got a Golf, not sure if it's the diesel one or not, and loves it. Maybe in Sacramento but they're pretty awesome in the rest of the country! Ugh, no. Unless you want to die, it and the Yaris have horrible safety ratings. Which isn't terribly surprising considering it has to defend itself against 2-3 ton vehicles. PLUS, the Fit is a horribly cheaply made car and not reflective of the quality Honda's been known for in the past few decades. If you don't mind used, this is a pretty solid wagon! You might also consider a Focus Wagon same effective price, better gas mileage AND doesn't require diesel which at least out here is 60-70 cents more per gallon.
I disagree about the build quality of the Fit. It's a solid, clever car with an excellent chassis and good motor. Build quality is on par with anything Honda has brought out in the same segment since the CRX came out really. It sure reminds me a lot of the Civic Si hatchbacks of old, except the chassis on the Fit is very solid and not made out of sponge cake like previous Civics. I'm a big fan of the Fit personally
I test drove the Fit as well. Given that I previously drove an Acura TSX, it was just familiar enough for me to notice how 'cheap' it felt. When thinking outside the context of my TSX, I really enjoyed the performance and space, but in the end I couldn't get over my snobbiness.
I would certainly hope a mid-range car in the Honda luxury line would be of better quality than the cheapest car in their line

If you get the TDI get one with a manual transmission. Don't even look at one with an auto. The older ones are known for rattles and creaking noises but they're a pretty well built car. The motor is pretty solid and so is the clutch. At 40+ mpg it's enough to overlook the fact that they are a PITA to work on. For more info: http://tdiclub.com/
No, that is not the reason. People who think "real men drive manuals" are retarded. The reason is that the DSG trans fail often even if you stay on top of the maintenance. The same trans is used in some Audi as well and they are just as bad. A Golf TDI with a manual is just a more reliable and fuel efficient machine. They both shine in certain applications and gear-heads will argue back and forth about it till the end of time. That I get. I'm really talking about the people who have that mentality with their "commuter" cars. It's just dumb.

If I was getting a car I wouldn't even consider a automatic, ever, and not because it's less manly. The only time I've driven one would be when I've been the US or Canada. I always try and ask for a manual but the rentals always give you the "look". Thing is when you're leaning to drive here and take your test, it's always in a manual, and by then you are so use to it, you don't even think about changing gear, you just do it. I can't think of a single plus an Auto has over an manual. Even if I'm in traffic, I'm not even thinking about changing gear, it just happens. Maybe it's been a while since I've been LA. Also as Lurker pointed out they are going to last you so much longer. (Lurker, that's probably how that Audi did 500,000 miles by the way, all cars here are manuals, and that's why I wouldn't be put off from a German car with 75k on it). They get into the exaust, then back into the turbo via egr. By the time it presents a problem the damage will be too great, and so far they are simply replacing the fuel system. Go go VW! Although this is not a 2012 model year specific, 2011/12 owners are also reporting the same complaints. Just a heads up.
