ASUS V3400TNT-TV

Reviewed by: Nick "Sab" Dozier

Introduction

Since 1990, ASUSTeK (or ASUS for short) has manufactured some of the finest hardware products for end users. Although most famous for their motherboards, ASUS has shown excellent products in all fields, including video cards. The V3400TNT-TV offers the same great ASUS performance and value. This card is packed with features that make it stand out among the other TNT cards (including the famed Spectra 2500). It is not without its faults though...

Technology information

Let's get right down to it, the ASUS TNT rules. As you've probably already heard several times, the NVIDIA Riva TNT chip offers incredible features.

Optimized Direct3D acceleration
Complete DX5 and DX6 support
Twin texel (TNT) 32-bit graphics pipeline
Per pixel perspective correct texture mapping
24-bit or 16-bit HW Z buffer (floating point or integer)
Anti-aliasing: full scene, order independent
100% HW Triangle setup

Windows NT 3.5, 4.0 and 5.0 display drivers
Windows 95 and 98 Display Driver, DirectDraw, Direct3D, DirectVideo, ActiveX
Windows 3.x display drivers
OpenGL ICD for Windows 95 and NT (passes compliance tests)

Installation

Installation was not very hard, just your standard procedure of plug in, point to drivers, reset, and you're all set.. I did have to do it twice though, not sure if it was my fault or what, probably was =).

As for the physical installation, the card is nearly twice the size of my Velocity 4400 AGP. Simply put, the card is a damn monster!

If you owned a Riva 128 based card, you may recall a rocky installation. NVIDIA nearly perfected the TNT to avoid weird errors and conflicts.

Pricing and availability

At this time, the ASUS V3400TNT-TV is hard to find in stores or unavailable. Estimated price is from $100 (no TV, 8 MB) to $200+/- as tested (TV-capture/input/output, 16 MB). Since the price is unknown, it's hard to speculate the value. If you're looking for a card with all those fancy features everyone could possibly use and still great 2D/3D performance, this card may be perfect for you. (This puts the Matrox Marvel G200-TV in a hell of a bind)

If the incredible TV-input and output do not apply to you, then go for the plain ASUS V3400TNT because it will still offer all the features of other TNTs and the ASUS name.
