Aid agencies examine doomsday scenario in Zimbabwe - CNN.com This is the first i can recall hearing about this, apparently its been going on for some time. The entire country is falling apart, pretty crazy. This line caught my attention, and the asshole in me wants to make remarks about black people's inability to run stuff: Since disruptions to the agriculture-based economy began in 2000 with the often violent seizures of thousands of white-owned commercial farms the economy as a whole contracted by about 30 percent, it said.
It was posted here a while ago I think. Zimbob use to be one of the best off nations in that area iirc. Maybe the evil white man aint so evil after all.....
If you want to see a very good movie that also contains a very pertinent social commentary on African states, watch The Last King of Scotland. I highly recommend it.
I remember when the seizure of white property first began, and was outraged. Now that they've made a complete mess of things I find it sad and yet somehow poetic justice.
Mugabe has been president ever since independance (around 30 years). And pretty much every election since then has been said to have been rigged. The people there are getting screwed big time, seems like to me. I have no idea what the solution is. Even places like Uganda which have suffered the likes of Idi Amin and lived to tell the tale, still seem to be pretty fucked up. And what African country doesn't have problems? Or for that matter what country in the world doesn't have problems? As hard as it is, the people will have to fix it themselves (I'm not shrugging it off saying 'tough luck'. It's the unfortunate reality as far as I can tell).
Eavanar has some good points most of the time. The problem lies with people not wanting to hear the trueth about some of the aspects of society. Though tact may be missing, the meat and potatoes of what he brings to the forefront has merit. Only time it really bugs me, is when I choose the keep my head buried in the sand.
