I dunno, all I can do is draw on my own experiences. My parents spanked and both my sister and I have consistently scored in the 140-160 range. And the same with my teenager - I spanked = she's been identified as gifted. My 5 year old hasn't been tested yet but I fully expect she will too, just based on my observations of her.

Anyway, obviously I don't condone full on beatings. But a smack on the ass now and then for bad behavior has worked fine for me. Smart, well behaved kids. A higher IQ won't do you a lot of good if you're an undisciplined little shit anyway. :)

my parents spanked the shit out of me and i came out alright.
i love watching old home videos of me being a little badass kid getting spanked on camera. hilarity. I love and thank my parents for teaching me dicipline at an early age.

This day and age i think more kids need it.

dunno how i'd discipline my kids though if i ever have any.
the ear pinch is a good idea

as far it affecting IQ, i doubt it.. i think it would have more to do with genetics, self discipline, and focus.

I think it's probabaly more that uninvolved shitty parents spank their kids more often. The kids score low because no one reads to them or gives them attention at home, and then they get spanked because the parents are lazy and short tempered.

I have no problem with spanking, don't get the wrong idea. I'm just trying to say that bad parents are more likely to spank needlessly, not that you should never do it.

Am I the only one here who thinks its wrong to slap your kid no matter where or why? I've never been hit by my parents, just got a firm yelling at and some forced extended exercise like running 10-15 miles.

Pulling on a kids ear? Hmmm...could cause a rupture in the ear drum, causing your child to go deaf...I'm sure someone could drum up some money to make a study into that.

Please...people are stupid. The reason some people don't spank their kids is because they're afraid someone is going to call Social Services on them.

I've spanked my son in public before because he was being way to silly and bugging the crap out of his younger sister, and wouldn't listen.

    People..it's called DISCIPLINE.

And they're study is dumb at that because the kids that scored lower could also have other issues with learning, or could be another environmental factor (like watching too much TV).

Oh, so I take it you read the whole study and determined their methodology was flawed based on your own experience designing child development studies?

Anyways, I figured this thread would just become "I was spanked and I'm a fucking genius!" so let me throw my own completely unscientific, bias, anecdotal, non-peer reviewed, non-published, uneducated, personal experience:

    I wasn't spanked, and I'm a fucking genius! :p

Some kids needs to be hit so they understand that they are just little children and not the boss. Some don't.

950 isn't this your area of study in college? Is the psychological trauma really that bad to retard brain development (hehehehe)? Wouldn't the generations of parents spanking their children ultimately lower the overall average IQ and, thus, making any gains by not spanking your children pointless in the grand scheme due to adsafd;oisjf;on

Considering this isn't D&D on SomethingAwful, I figured that anecdotal evidence would be acceptable here. Sorry for not digging up another equally worthless study that supports my views.

... not to mention that five points is less than the margin of error for most IQ tests. Oh and I'm sure that every family that participated had all other environmental factors entirely controlled. Scientific my ass.

pfffft you were totally flame baiting with this one
and anecdotally you seem to be in the minority here. spankees win

there is a big difference between spanking your kids and beating the ever living shit out of them. i dont see a need to spank your kids a ton, but i guess if you want, go for it. i guess in this case, it just means my kids will be better

I used to spank when my son was young and needed it. Now all I have to do is get the right tone of voice or look and he knows I'm serious. None of that time-out crap for me. That shit don't work.

BTW a true "spanking" is more emotional than it is physical.

I have to look at it like I do most "studies" that make breakthrough discoveries......like this one. I bet there's some funding available now that wasn't available before the calims were made. It's like: laboratories cause cancer......their funding depends on finding carcenogens.

I'd imagine that if you sampled a lot of people who've been spanked, you'd find a lot of dumb people.

I'd also imagine that if you sampled a lot of people that weren't spanked, you could find less dumb people.

But I think it's not logical to say therefore that spanking makes you dumb, just that more dumb people may happen to spank their kids. Just my $0.02 from a spankee. :D

Maybe spanking rules out the risk taking aspect in some way of being a human, which can inhibit the rising of IQ. I DONT EVNE KNOW MY MY IQZ lol

I was a spankee and looking back, I deserved it. My kid is 10 years old and was spanked between 3-6. I get told by people today that he is the most behaved and respectful kid they've ever met. He is also in 7th grade and reads at college level according to a test he took 2 weeks ago. I don't believe in IQ tests. I scored gifted myself at grade 10 but to me you can't judge intelligence solely by the way the test does so to me this study is flawed right out of the gate.

the guy that wrote this is a strong opponent of spanking...no wonder the "studies" came out the way they did.

    Bullshit science.

Kids should not only have a healthy respect for parents but also an ever so slight fear of a parents hand making contact with their ass.

It helps keep them in check.

That was my very first thought. This kind of "science" is what is shaping our society though. Law and public policy is written based on bullshit like this.

What I would like to see is an unbiased study of IQ versus achievement, spanking versus not. What I predict you'll find is that generally speaking the less disciplined kids will be achieving well below their ability.

These "sociological" studies always sound like BS. They just seem to take a bunch of samples, and determine one of the two outcomes...

I could totally see this being true. I tend to side with Lurkers outlook:

I used to have to spank my kids all the time. Now it's very rare that I have to. Usually I can resort to the "Dad voice" and all is well.

Seriously. No offense to our sociology majors, but I look at it as nearly as scientific as astrology. Not saying it isn't a valuable study or isn't scientific at all, it just seems to be very subjective and influenced by opinion and personality.

See what I mean - opinion and personality. You assumed I hadn't read the article and came to a conclusion that satisfied your prejudice but was incorrect. :)

EDIT: Also, the higher incidence of spanking in the low IQ group could have been a result and not the cause. The dumber kids were possibly more misbehaved?
