Other countries already don't like us and anything in these leaks won't affect that one way or another, other countries deal with the US because it's in their best interest to do so, there is no other reason.

You guys should watch The Insider with Al Pacino and Russell Crowe. It's another one of Michal Mann's masterpieces.

[qote]On Wednesday, Amazon.com Inc. — which had provided WikiLeaks with use of its servers to distribute embarrassing State Department communications and other documents — evicted it. The site remains on the servers of its Swedish provider.
The ouster from Amazon came after congressional staff questioned the company about its relationship with WikiLeaks. Sen. Joe Lieberman praised Amazon's action and said it should "set the standard" for companies WikiLeaks is using to distribute "illegally seized material"[/quote]

This whole thing goes to show: put out military secrets, and everyone sternly lectures you. Put out embarrassing info on politicians, and all hell breaks loose, as they throw everything at you! :)

Ha! I hadn't though of it that way but so true. The Iraq and Afghan leaks were a lot more damaging than this one.

So are they just pretending to not be able to stop wikileaks and playing up the damage so they justify some bs law that will cockblock internet users?

This leak was damaging too, albeit in a more subtle way. Is diplomacy important? Is the information the diplomats share with our government sensitive? Will they be completely frank and complete if they're not sure the information is confidential? And as with the other leaks, informants will be put in danger.

Here's a Tweak specific hypothetical of what I'm talking about. Sparky and I are chatting via PM about what a knob gobbler Ali is. Bubbles hacks the PM history and posts these remarks on the forum. Now Ali knows Sparky and I are conspiring against him, Bubbles gets perma-banned, and nobody is going to speak frankly via PM ever again because there's no guarantee of confidentiality. And to top it all off Bubbles had leaked the PMs to hurt Dan (the government), when really the Tweak members (diplomats and informers) were most harmed.

If he intended to hurt Dan, which is arguable, he failed. The fallout is Ali now knows you and Sparky think he's a knob gobbler. Why is this a problem?

Ding, Ding, Ding! we have a winner. This is how our civil rights go away. The population buys the bullshit and actually surrender civil rights and at time even ask that they be taken away. stupid decisions all based on what amounts to a calculated advertising scam.

I hope countries won't terminate strategic alliances with each other over some silly comments about their officials. Besides, you think Karzai is going to stop accepting money from the American government that he uses to pay Taliban leaders because we called him paranoid? :p

No more than he's accepting bags of money (absolutely literally. Clear plastic bags. Full transparency, see?) from Iran.

I have a hard time with the rationalization that we need secrecy to justify the actions that are exposed. Sure an amount of secrecy is needed, but the objects of the secrecy is what I have issues with.
Then there's the persecutions of anyone or any institution that goes against the flow. Do something that doesn't paint the government in a good light and certain ruin ensues. If only a fraction of the effort that is being put into fighting WL was put into cutting guv waste and corruption, we'd bein better shape financially and have a solid standing in the world. Instead all stops are removed to keep things operating as they have for decades. We, as a nation, are not on a good path to be on. It's like our leaders are in self destruct mode and able to more than convince everyone that we'll come out smelling like a rose.

This isn't going to stop anything any more than semantec can do anything to stop adware/spyware/malware. We now have another war to replace the war on drugs.

I guess our own legislation doesn't apply to the diplomatics corps and military.
I've been checking some of the leaks and the poeple who would most dispise the USA government
for what's being released and the biggest relationship to suffer is the citicenry of the USA:
the general rank and file Americans and taxpayers. everyone else is expecting of their governements acting in these manners.
No wonder the guv-nor wants this shit burried deep.

So what is the point of this leak? This serves some sort of whistle blower purpose?

Good question. Wikileaks just flexing its muscles or trying getting publicity, maybe? I think it's safe to say barely anybody knew who wikileaks was before this, and now I think EVERYONE knows. Does this work to their benefit? It seems like a double-edge sword.

If they survive, you can be sure the next time they DO have something substantial to leak, it'll break big.

My point was just that whereas the earlier leaks could possibly be argued to serve some sort of public service, rooting out corruption or crime, etc, this current leak does nothing but to damage the United States and our interests.

The purpose is probably juvenile as in an "I'll show you" motive. A pissing contest. I used to believe that grown-ups were mature but that went out the window years ago.
The side benefit is that the citizenry gets to see a tiny bit of what lurks in the shadows. I still think this is being utilized as a smokescreen and is hiding a real threat while, at the same time,
creating rules for internet technology that haven't been written yet. Thus far, the rules being created right now, today, are not in the best interest of anyone outside of governing bodies. 22 Topics and bills being worked right now.....read those full texts deeply. I can almost guaranty it's in there somewhere or hidden behind a closed door session. We see through the exploits of WL just what our people in DC are capable of with foriegn entities. Imagine what they'll pull with the people who allow them to be where they are.

    IMHO:
the leaks aren't what damaged our nation. The commission of the acts in the leaks did. just because they were clasified doesn't mean they never happened and were the result of a mindset and modus oporandii of our government officials. If we have to maintain our standing in the world by underhanded trix and deciept and cover those acts up with backstabbing and juvenile highschool crap......do we really want to be where that'll take us in the long run?

The latest leak is probably a teaser of what's to come if anybody at Wikileaks ends up "disappearing", like a threat of some sort.

I can't defend Wikileaks anymore after this, but I still understand the need for whistleblowers.

My other theory, which will get me into mistawiskas and Torx's club, is that this is an inside job orchestrated to eventually give more power to the government.

I'm not leaning towards an inside job as much as perhaps an orchestrated manipulation like turning a lemon into lemonaid. The bad part isn't even something myself, HeavyD, goofus or Foric8'r has to contend with as much as you younger ones. these are rules of engagement being adopted and perfected here. Engagement of a adversay that hasn't had to be dealt with until now. Namely, the internet. There are people hired whose sole purpose is to find ways to mitigate the threat the information super highway poses to the government. This constitutes a censoring and disposal of anything deemed a threat. Threats by whose definition we'll not be privy to know of. These are interesting times. the critical thinking proccess has been sufficiently squelched to the point that insufficient numbers of people question anything any longer. Let me reitterate: what's happening now is the way the game's going to be played when most all of you are trying to have a relaxing care free retirement. The government/corporations will know everything there is to know about you, what you do, where you go, why you do what you do, how you do it, when you do it, where you're most likely to do it and who does what. While, at the same time, you will not know anything about them. Sci-fi paranoia? Just read the black part of the news articles and think about it again. This shit is happening right now behind the smoke and mirrors.

See, I believe that they've had a hostile attitude and intent with these leaks since Day #1. This one is definitely more blatant, but I don't think their intention was ever to make anything better or levy out justice. Maybe this guy's an anarchist or something, I dunno. He's in deep shit now though, I'd be surprised if he's not dead or locked up within a month.
