The teacher did a live installation on his laptop today. I was pretty impressed. Seemed like that did a huge leap fro, 6.06 when I used it.

so far so good...let's see the things i've noticed so far...

    1. fonts look better, but maybe that's just my eyes playing tricks on me?
    2. no more GAIM, it's now called Pidigin
    3. despite my general distaste for 3d window management, I've been playing with Compiz effects the whole time
    4. OpenOffice is bumped up to 2.3
    5. Evolution has integrated system tray notification of new e-mail, but I don't like it better than the 3rd party app I was using before as it doesn't tell me who the e-mail is from or subject, first line, etc. But, need to look into configuration options in evolution, could be that I can change that.

The GAIM project changed names to Pidgin about 6 months ago. Same project.

Well, 1st major news for me is that the Live CD now supports my Nvidia 8800 out of the gate. It didn't enable Compiz Fusion (aka Beryl) from the Live CD but that is no surprise. Frankly I'm a little nervous installing it at the moment, think I'll do a full XP backup first. I have XP installed on a 250GB SATA drive split down the middle - 1/2 NTFS, 1/2 unpartitioned. I've had some bad experiences with Ubuntu in the past where it would fuck up the whole disk. Actually considering buying a second drive just to eliminate that as a possibility. Maybe even ESATA.

So what is the status of Automatix? Does it work in 7.10, or even necessary? I would think that the DVD codecs and what-not would still make it very handy.

Automatix2 works fine. Lots of servers are getting bogged down the last few days though so some updates and installs might not work on the first try. (atleast the Canada repo server is)

Doing a full install on my Sempron test box now. It has a Geforce 3 in it, so I'm assuming Compiz Fusion won't work very well. Anybody know the system requirements for that piece?

I am giving it a test drive from my laptop right now. I am running the Live session from a flash drive thanks to the instructions on this site:
USB Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon install | Pen Drive Linux

...in case anyone is curious. The performance is a LOT better in the Live session from the USB drive and it of course supports a persistent state.

What kind of Geforce 3? MX or a real GF3? I've ran it fine on a Radeon 8500 64mb. 1Ghz AMD thunderbird with 384mb ram.

Persistant linux on USB flash rocks. I deffinately recommend Puppy Linux to anyone who likes this type of environment.

    It's a Geforce 3 Ti200, so I guess it will run OK? The system is a Sempron 2400 w/ 512MB of DDR3200.
  11. The GF3 didn't have an MX version. It was just the ti200 and ti500.

I installed it at home, now that I'm plugged directly into the router and don't have to use the wireless adapter. I'm very happy with it so far. Seems fast and efficient.

I installed the new ATI drivers last night (8.42.3), and after an hour or so of messing with them, I got them working with full 2/3D acceleration. However, they caused a lot of minor bugs and some artifacting on my desktop. All I can say though: AIGLX ENABLED WITH ATI DRIVERS! WOO!

I reverted back to the last stable release which I can live with for a while. Hopefully they'll release an update soon that will fix some of the bugs on the older chipsets (R300++), so I can install Compiz without XGL and all that crap.

I just said buh-bye to Windows XP and welcomed Ubuntu 7.10 to my main rig. Installation was painless, although a bit longer than I anticipated. Overall, I'm very happy with it.
