Meh i kinda figured that out on my own. for long term survival there is no way we can can be confined to earth. Even if we never ran out of resources the sun isnt going to be there forever.

I'm sure that eventually the virus that is man will spread to outer space.

Not sure if any of you are aware of this but.....

We are planning to go back to the moon. On the moon, we will get all of our stuff in order to go to mars. We will have stations there capable of turning the local soil into fuel. Once we get going to the moon down, we will then head to mars.

Now, it may sound great BUT, the trip to the moon is 3 days, mars is between 9 months to a year, one way. Once there, they will spend about a year, then come back, another year. Obvioulsy, there is no way for them to carry that much food, so they will have to eat recycled food.

If all goes as planned, we have an exciting future just as our parents did with the space race.

The two to the right are the replacement for the space shuttle. The smaller is the crew vehicle, the larger is the equipment vehicle. It is pretty close in specs to the good old saturn 5 :-D

Heh, that was my reaction too.

    think about it:

Howstuffworks "How much does the average person eat in two years?"
it takes 880lbs of JUST what we need for 2 years, so 1320lbs of food for 3 years

Drinking Water & Ground Water Kids' Stuff > Water Triva Facts

it takes 2.5 quarts of water per day, so 2.5*365*3, so 685 gallons of water for 3 years.

How much does one gallon of water weigh

    a gallon weighs 8.34lbs, so 685*8.34 = 5700lbs of water.

IIRC, we pay about 10k bucks per pound to get something to LOW earth orbit,

so you are looking at ~70.2 mil bucks just to get that a couple miles up.....

I'm surprised they aren't talking about putting the astronauts in some sort of stasis, like they did in the original Planet of the Apes.

We'd have already been to mars if it weren't for the wasted money the government is responsible for. If it were discovered that there is a proffit
in having a permanent settlement on mars, private industry would have made it so by now also.

its a shame nasa is just now taking moon basing serious, i know theres funding issues and i dont know who funds nasa(gov?), but i feel like ever since bush has been in office space exploration has been on a downfall. Anyone agree?

We shoulda been back on the moon by now, planted telescopes on the moon and begun working on mars travel... I understand these things take time, but damn..

recycled food? wouldnt food lost its nutrients over time of recycling? what kind of plans do they have to revitalize the nutrients in the food? Additives?
recycled food.. my first thought was eating their own poo... lol

The downfall of NASA started right after LBJ left office and really took a big hit when Reagan rebuilt our military. We never should have stopped going to the moon IMO. There should have already been a permanent base there.

Although I didn't get into any political discussions, I sort of got a feeling that Bush is why we are going back. Think, how long have we been talking about going to mars? None of the other presidents have done anything about it. I know little Bush (FLs Governer) has done a lot. The program I am in is funded by him.

The reason it will take longer is we are not in a space race as with the moon.

International Space Station - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"In fact the Space Shuttle program, which as of 2006 nearly costs $5 billion annually"

I would image we will try to get together with other nations just as with the ISS, although I have not heard anything from anyone, just my thoughts.

If gold were discovered, or another precious metal, on the moon, private enterprise would have a mine there inside two years. I don't believe this country has the collective will to regain anything from yesteryear....not anything. The tree-huggers would find some sort of 'endangered species' there and file a suit, the PC croud would file injunctions because the programs aren't named correctly, and the ACLU would file suits because there aren't enough black men and women or other minorities in the space program.
Meanwhile, China and the rest of the world, laughs from the vantage point of their moon bases.

It doesn't matter if we stay or go we will die off eventually. It's the natural order of things.

    • We will get older
    • We will become ill
    • We will die

You get the idea of course cutting NASA's budget didn't help either.

nah, I think its more of the bullshit we have to put up with. Had these terrorists left us alone, had saddam allowed inspections, etc. In reality, we (americans) don't care what the rest of the world does as long as it does not majorly effect us negatively (IE, start of WW2). We just need to protect our assets and security first.

I would HOPE americans are starting to get fed up with this stuff. I think eventually, we'll come around and tell them to piss off.....

P.S. 24 hour until I get on the bus to the viewing site :-D
