Interesting answers so far. Some are blowing it off, some are bashing President Bush because they can't contemplate or defend President Obama on this, some are actually calling him on it. Let me ask you this.....can anyone ever criticize Barack Obama without being labeled a racist and without bringing up George Bush? Seriously. Fiddy had a good non partisan reaction.....a logical reaction. Wiskas, you should really read more about it.

I didn't like his answer obviously but, because HE represents the U.S. as a whole. He immediately bashed the police and sided with his friend. You can't do that when you don't have all the facts and especially when you're The President. The entire world is listening to your every word.

So the President of the United States should not care about the struggles about his fellow countrymen? (black or white)

    That's messed up.

You cannot publicly undermine the force that oversees law within ALL our cities like he did.

    FAIL.

    A couple of things here:

    1) Obama said he personally knows the professor so I'm not sure what you would expect someone to say about a "freind" (especially of his stature).

    2) Obama made it pretty clear that he didn't have all the facts and that it seemed like the issue was that when the professor showed his ID it should have been the end of the storey but it wasn't and it got escalated needlessly by the police officer (which was stupid).

    3) I think it would have been smarter for Obama to answer the question like, "I don't have all the facts of the case right now and it would be best not to comment on it".

    4) Bush has nothing to do with this.

    5) Based off of what I have heard about the story it sounds like both people were in the wrong.

    6) Who the hell cares! Just another distraction and something more sensational that the media can use to sell air time.

    whoa there spin doctor.
    let me clarify:

I don't think its a big issue that obama commented on what happened. not the comment itself, but the discussion surrounding the fact that he did comment on it

you're gunnin' for me today aint ya

    1) What?

    2) Yep he made it clear yet he still said the police acted stupidly. They did not. On a call of this nature you make sure the house doesn't have other people in it that are forcing the homeowner to get rid of the police. Him showing his ID isn't good enough. You sweep the house anyway......otherwise the officer wouldn't be doing his job!

    3) Perfect answer.

    4) That's 2 in a row!!!

    5) The officer wasn't in the wrong in the least.

    6) See number 2.

I think he was taking sides with his friend Prof. Gates which is what got him in the most trouble. It's hard to be unbiased when a friend is involved sometimes.

AFAIK this is a great distraction from truly important issues.

No, I'm not 'gunnin' for ya' I'm just trying to figure out what you mean.

You said: "i cant believe he is worrying about shit like this" then "who cares kind of thing?" then "i was referring to obama commenting on it, not the situation itself " which did in a way make it sound like Obama shouldn't care about this issue. That's what I was trying to get at an understand.

Taking a broader view of this whole thing, you know how so many white people are throwing around the term "Post racial society?" Pfft, since Obama's election, race has been a topic of discussion in a way it has not been for decades.

In one way that is a good thing, because it is an issue that needs to be discussed and better understood. HOWEVER, given the third-grade level of the discourse in the most of our media, it often does not serve to educate and illuminate, it only serves to anger and divide.

HeavyD and IVWshane got it right. It is nothing but sensationalization of an unimportant happening that happens to be less important than probably 763.72596 billion other happenings.

He admits his driver kicked the door open when the key wouldn't work, someone saw that and called the police. When someone my age driving a nice car is seen kicking in a door in a decent neighborhood police see the worst possible scenario. He's coming back to kill his ex-wife living in the house he paid for or at least violating a restraining order. If he would have been calm and followed instructions we wouldn't be talking about this. But no, he lost his mind and they took him out of the house until they confirmed he lived there and had no other motive to break in the house. What if they would have left him and his ex came home an hour later and he killed her? Cops just can't win.

While the comment may have showed a lack of restraint on Obama's part, I'll give it to him on this one, at least he exercised restraint in not calling on Congress to hastily craft and immediately pass a bill authorizing $3 trillion for the creation of a new race relations department in the government.

The person who saw the 'possible break-in in progress' saw 2 people. When the police officer arrived he only saw 1 person meaning:

    1) The other person was inside
    2) There are 2 robbers in the house the guy doesn't know about
    3) Midget option

So, I'd say the cop being thorough and did the right thing. Just because he proved that he lived at that house didn't mean something bad was going down. Rich people commit the most heinous crimes.
