Hey guys - I'm guessing a lot of you have seen instability with the forum in the past few weeks, and I wish I had an explanation for it but I don't. Unfortunately with my job, which is 50% driving cars during the day, sometimes I can't do anything about the server being down for 6+ hours at a time before coming back to the office to patch/reboot whatever's necessary. In my case, forums have proven to be just too high maintenance for one person that's got a regular job, the usual culprits being DoS or hack bots (usually Chinese based servers that constantly look for web sites to spam with whatever). It's just not something I can block and prevent by myself, and from the transition thread the consensus I received was that while everyone was interested in helping with the problems, nobody else had experience with the SQL/PHP/Apache and specific forum software to jump in and do it without training. Jubal/Smersh proposed an interesting idea: have Tweak3D's forum be replaced by a Subreddit. He event set this up: http://www.reddit.com/r/tweak3d/ The plus sides: More stable Bigger community that could mingle with ours and help it grow We could still have a NSFW forum Doesn't cost anything Security/server/software updates are done by someone else Better mobile support, 3rd party Reddit tools and Imgur integration The bad sides: No avatars or signatures We lose all control of the administration, the site could eventually be 100% out of our hands We can't bump old threads, they'll always be archived on Reddit - this would make a thread like 950's Africa threads impossible (but he could link to his blog or post updates still). Instead a new thread would be added and people could reply, rather than bumping old threads. You can't use your T3D login so you would need a Reddit login if you don't have one now We can't host images directly on Reddit or add to our posts as easily (we can use Imgur and it's good though) All existing threads, users, pics and avatars would be gone as a functional forum, HOWEVER I could archive a static HTML replacement so people could go browse the archives, they just couldn't reply or use NSFW. There are other pluses and minuses too, of course. The main thing is I am looking for a solution to my problems and I get stressed when the site goes down, it's doubly bad when I'm working my 9-5 and can't fix it for hours on end. I just am unable to do so. The alternative to this plan is try yet another hosting company, hopefully save some money, and try again to support the existing forum software. No matter what we do on this front, forums do require periodic updates, regular spam prevention and a few hours of maintenance a month.
