Project 1968 Porsche 912 - Updates, detailed with PICS!

    I posted this thread up on a bunch of Porsche forums, and recently finally posted it on the big one (912bbs.org). The replies I got were all different than the other forums.. I don't know why I waited so long to post it there.

    Anyway, one of the replies said,
    I had not thought too much about the steering wheel, but assumed since it was covered with this ugly $1 wheel wrap that it was probably worn out. I also assumed it was rubber like most of the 912s and older Porsches I see, and from glancing through the wrap when I first bought the car, it looked like the rubber had worn out and was down to the inner metal wire. I assumed it was much worse UNDER the wrap than the wrap itself.


    Curiosity got the best of me, so I went outside and removed the wheel wrap. As I began untying the nylon, I felt like an archeologist unveiling some great artifact. I peeled back a little bit and I was shocked: it was indeed wood! As I carefully untied the rest over the next few minutes, I unveiled more and more of the wheel. By the time I removed the whole thing, it was clear that the wheel was not only wood as the guy had suggested, but nearly in perfect shape. The cover preserved it very well over the years! It even has cool grooves for your fingers that I couldn't feel before.

    I looked it up and sure enough, a wooden steering wheel was a factory option back in 1968.

    Car's running awesome. It seemed pretty fast on the way to work today. With these tires I can really chuck it around some corners!

    less wheel gap + some gloss on that paint dude..

    thats awesome with the wooden steering wheel. you gonna varnish/laquer or polish it?
    i notice in the red one you can see his woodgrain gleaming through the windshield.

    Yeah, lowered would be sweet. That's the benefit of torsion bars, it'd be easy to lower.

    Torx, yeah I think I might refinish the wheel. I don't know anything about how to do it, but it'd be a nice touch.

    The exterior stays flat tan for now. :D I might find some matching / dull paint and clean it up, but I don't want to replace that 40-year old oxidation with glossy brand new paint. I dig the nostalgiac look.

    Here's the wheel repaint etc:

    5 wheels. I had no spare before, so I figured I may as well have a matching one. These are actually spares from the later 911s, so usually they're in pretty good shape. They're also cheap!

    Most of them looked decent, but had OEM stickers on them:

    I removed the sticker with Brake cleaner first, and cleaned and degreased all the wheels.

    Here's the paint I opted to use. It's the Rustoleum "Hammered Finish" silver. This is the same durable paint I used on my homemade gaming seat.

    I love this paint because of the finish it leaves, but it's also very strong for "cheap" spray paint.

    It started raining minutes after my first ultra-light coat was applied to each wheel, so I had to wait 2-days to apply more paint.

    Picking up where I left off, the final coats turned out exactly how I wanted them. I applied 2 very thin coats and 2 heavier coats.

    The biggest problem was that they're now -too- clean and shiny, and the rest of the car isn't. As I am putting on some miles they are getting brake dust and road grime, completing the look I was going for. ;)

    My carpet kit finally shipped. Goodie! The car's brakes are now so bad that I can't drive it. The front right pad is down to metal. Both calipers have issues. The e-brake is not doing anything now, also.

    I will have to wait until I have a little time to replace and rebuild all that stuff. I also need to patch up some interior things and lock in the floor board, repaint the seat sliders, and perform a handful of other tasks before installing the carpet.

    The carpet's arrived. I could install it, but I thought "hmm, maybe this would be a good time to install a rollcage?" I mean, if the car's ever going to the track *ahem* it'd make sense to keep those Fuchs around for some Hoosiers and put a rollcage in with some harnesses instead of lap belts. And those seats...

    I haven't driven the car for a couple weeks now (makes me sad!) because the brakes are still shot. I have been gathering parts and here's what is new:

    I acquired some newer brakes (vented rotors and calipers) from a 1983 Porsche 911SC. This should be a major upgrade, but also requires the suspension and front control arms to be upgraded. Luckily this stuff is cheap. I paid $65 for all the brake stuff and he threw in brand new pads. I'll take pics and stuff when I get to installing it.

    I'm trying to get some stock brakes, too, so I can fix that for now and start driving the car again. I also fixed the rear latch, which was causing the decklid to embarassingly pop-up when I hit speed bumps etc. It does not do this anymore.

    Dirt is starting to build up on the front wheels, and I think after driving it a couple months I'll rotate them out, so the front and rear both look old again. :)

    The most recent, significant "upgrade" was to fix something that's bothered me a lot...

    Notice the pretty white 21st-century license plate on my 41-year old car? It sure looks out of place when you start to really think about it. Until very recently, there was no solution to this, but luckily on July 1st 2009, California changed the law so any 63-69 car can be equipped the original year-of-manufacture black license plates if you can acquire a set that's unregistered. I mentioned this near the first post, and now that it's active, I took my plates into the DMV... $40 in fees later, my car now sports black license plates. I even peeled back the old year-sticker to show the original 1968 pink sticker, including the serial number. It will be covered as soon as my new 2010 tabs arrive with month sticker (currently missing).

    I also put a genuine Vasek Polak license plate frame on the car. I opted to put it up front because it looked too busy out back. Vasek Polak was a famous racer, who ran dealerships in California during the golden era of Porsches. This car may have been serviced by Vasek at some point, but anyway... these license plates are no longer produced and are highly sought after. I found a great deal on Ebay ($35) and had to have it.

    The rear plate has some rust, and the paint had worn through on some of the characters. I didn't mind the worn/slightly dull black, as it fits the car, but I didn't like the worn through characters so I busted out my palette and some paints, and mixed up some yellow and red to closely match the color. I then re-painted the rusted out areas for now. I might take the plate off and completely repaint it at some point, but I wanted it to keep that vintage look for now.

    The lighting is better in this picture. I did not actually paint the other parts of the characters (mainly just the center of the G and the 6), but the picture makes it look like I repainted everything. The match is "good enough" for now.

    Now the car's that much closer to how it would've actually looked driving down a California street in the late 60s.

    I'll probably clean up the lower couple of inches and put a plain chrome frame around the rear.

    I had a longer post written but I lost it by accident, so here's take 2.

    Put a $5 chrome frame on the rear plate:

    The brakes were starting to make lots of noise, and one side had been pulling for weeks. I bought replacement calipers with pads for $50. Removing old calipers:

    The rears seemed fine. Fronts were well ready.

    I like how you can change the pads in seconds if you want to. But since I was replacing the calipers, too it's a bit bigger job.

    The new calipers were much nicer and cleaner. The rotor had a little wear, but they were pretty good still and we saw no need to replace.

    Then we bled the fronts, and threw the wheels back on.

    We left the shop and agreed to meet about 15 miles south at a restaurant for lunch. Since my 912 has one seat still, I drove solo. I was scared of the freeway, since I had only taken the car on it once and that was over a month ago. It had been sitting since then with a few new parts. But I figured it'd be okay. I merged onto the freeway at 70 and about 2 miles later the car started losing speed, it seemed really down on power. I noticed it was getting worse, so I pulled over.

    A highway patrol officer was out back before I was out of the car. Amazing. He was really young and asked if everything was okay, to which I replied and told him my friend was coming. He didn't want to stick around so he told me to sit in the seat with the lapbelt on until my friend arrived. :)

    A couple minutes later after baking in 80+ without a moving car or AC, I popped the back. I couldn't find anything immediately wrong. The fuel looked a little low in the filter, but it was clean. Still, the low fuel seemed to be an indication that somewhere from the gas tank to the fuel pump, we had a problem. Maybe the fuel pump itself, but it's hard to say this soon.

    The car wouldn't idle very well, but I was able to bring it back to the shop without trouble. I think some loose crap from the tank has dislodged finally and I should probably replace both filters from just a few months ago, as sediment made its way from the tank. I guess I should really clean that up next. :)

    Check that out, its actually a 3 part system that cleans and seals the tank. You would need a couple of them, each kit only does a 5 gallon tank. Project is looking good though!

    Oh man, I didn't realize how far behind this thread is now.

    Still driving it every day, and I just drove the car into the shop this evening for some minor surgery.

    Cliff notes and pictures will come later, since I documented everything:
    -I decided to rebuild the mechanical fuel pump and took it apart for that. The car runs better than it ever did with the electric and it looks more OEM now. :)

    -With the weather getting cold, I installed windshield wipers. I had to bore out a washer and clean the existing windshield wiper motor arms with a razor blade, but I got it working.

    -I installed a fixed racing bucket for my driver's seat. I did not have aluminum tubing so I made the seat rails out of WOOD. :D It's hilarious, but I won't post pics until I've got the aluminum rails and sliders in place. ;)

    -I decided I should fix the seals in the windows ASAP, as it's beginning to rain a bit here, so I pulled out the headliner. It was a nasty mess. I will have to get a couple dents on the roof fixed while it's out, then I can pull the front and rear windshield seals, clean up anything inside, replace the seals and headliner, polish up all the bits that I've removed since this beginning and re-install the whole interior.

    -I also scored this. Count the plugs (on this one side).

    It's a 1980 911SC motor, which means with fuel injection / modern ignition the car will have over double the horsepower it had before. I think I can build it up to about 250 HP in a car that weighs around 2000 lbs. JOY!

    Lousy iPhone pics, but here are the wooden seat rails since Octane91 asked for them :lol:

    I needed a quick fix to mount different seats in my car, because the OEM driver's seat was falling apart, causing it to be very difficult to shift into 1st gear (the shifter would actually run into the seat). I typically only drive the car 4 miles/day at the moment, so figured I'd be ghetto about it for now. I also only have a 40 year old lap belt. I'll put in proper safety stuff later, for now I just drive carefully and never hit traffic so I figured even sitting directly on metal without a seatbelt is fine. I'm way ahead of the curve.

    I cut some grated steel to fit across the stock seat rail location. I didn't even have to drill it heh..

    I needed metal, but wanted aluminum. Regular hardware stores don't carry the right sizes/lengths and are crazy expensive, so I figured I'd build a template (I didn't have my sliders yet anyway, which I got later for free). I found some wood out back...

    I'll be getting some aluminum this weekend for the proper slider install, so I can adjust the position etc. I don't even know if I'll keep this seat, but it matches the car's vintage well.

    Don't worry, I've only driven the car a few miles with this setup and now have a great template for the metal. :)
