I deployed again this past Saturday. After a long fiasco, I have arrived in Singapore. I get to enjoy a few days here in a government supplied hotel, then fly out Thursday to Diego Garcia. It's been a pretty entertaining time here so far. We got in ~3am yesterday, and stayed awake all day. Our reservations were screwed up at the hotel, so they put us up in the Swissotel Hotel in Singapore for the first night (or remainder of it). Then, yesterday they put us up in the Fairmont Singapore Hotel yesterday. I got a free upgrade to the Executive Suite, where I get free access to the Executive Lounge (free food all day long, free Wifi, free beer/wine from 1700-2000 daily, and a butler that basically waits on me hand and foot). I spent yesterday hanging out in India Town, where we drank some random beer in a beer garden at 8:30 in the morning. Then we wandered around and checked out the shops and got hassled by a bunch of people wanting to sell us stuff (camera lenses, Cashmir scarfs, custom tailored suits, and other electronics).

I finally crashed hard last night after being awake for ~40 hours straight, and woke up this morning feeling pretty good. I've drank a bunch of coffee and have gotten my day started. Plans for today include eating my complimentary breakfast (which is insanely good, including fresh cooked Curry/Indian food, eggs cooked to order, smoked salmon, fresh cheeses and olives, and also traditional British breakfast fare) then enjoying the pool and hot tub. After that, I'm gong to take all of us to the Executive Lounge (they don't have access, but the hotel made the mistake of telling me I could take guests to the lounge). We're going to see just how much free beer we can drink in 3 hours time. Their beer selection isn't stellar, but it's good for free. Their selection includes Corona, Heineken (regular and light), Tiger Beer, and some other random type. Afterwards, we might go out wandering about the town.

Then, tomorrow I fly out to Diego Garcia and start my actual duties. I love being in foreign countries like this where I have no curfew, no limits, and an awesome group of guys to hang out with. Great start to the deployment.

Here are a few random photos I snapped yesterday.

Pics of the view outside of our rooms. The first few were from the 45th floor, and the rest were from the 28th floor.

Photos of a random shrine we found in Little India. We were invited in by someone that worked there, and were encouraged to snap photos. This was in the middle of a slummy area, but it was absolutely beautiful. The guy that worked there was insanely gracious, and seemed very proud to have us visiting.

Here are the pictures from today's fun day of exploration. I will post descriptions of the photos later, when I get a free minute. We're headed down to the pool to swim and enjoy some drinks. Been a fun day!

    Updated with photo descriptions.

We are heading out from the island here this evening to move onto our next destination (Diego Garcia). There, we will meet up with the ship I'm going to be stationed on. I'll be there for a few months, and afterwards will explore yet another country. We're pretty depressed that this awesome vacation is coming to an end. But, it was fun while it lasted!

It's an awesome place. We've stayed away from the whores, and have stuck to the historic stuff and cool bars. This place is famous for it's whore houses and "escorts." But, it's insanely expensive and I could never do that to my wife. It never hurts to look, though. We did walk by the Orchard Towers (affectionately known as Four Floors of Whores), and walked into a few tailor shops there. The tailors were trying to rip me off so I walked out. They started out at ~$1400 for a custom tailored Armani suit, and by the time I walked out they were down to ~$400. They were dropping the prices so fast I knew they were trying to rip me off. So, I just walked out and ignored them.

It's been interesting how a majority of the help at the hotel I'm staying at (Fairmont Singapore) are women. They are the most polite and gracious women I've ever met. Just insanely pleasant to deal with. One girl turned red and was awe struck that I called her Ma'am. She asked me to call her by her first name, Pia. She said it was her job to call me Sir, and that it made her feel uncomfortable when I call her Ma'am. At the Executive Lounge, I was welcomed by name last night without telling them my room number. It seems like a majority of the women here want to move to the US, and have dreams of making it happen sometime in the next few years. They say that the cost of living here is ridiculous, and they could make more money there.

There's a ton of history here. It's depressing to me that I'm leaving here to go to Diego Garcia, where there is practically nothing. I'm really not looking forward to it. But, that's life. I've enjoyed my ultimate mini-vacation and appreciate the fact that the government let me have some fun here before my deployment. It just sucks to go back to work!

If you run into a financial contractor in Diego Garcia named Anders (29yrs old) - tell him his cousin Mike says waddup.

Sorry, I haven't been updating in quite a while. I've explored a majority of the island, and we are nearing our departure date (within the next few weeks). I have all sorts of photos, but can't upload them due to our horribly slow internet connection. Coleman, I haven't seen the guy. But, it's hard to keep tabs on who goes where. I spent a majority of my time drinking at the Diego Garcia Yacht Club (paid for a lifetime membership, so I could use their insanely cheap bar to drink). I also hung out at the Brit Club quite a bit, but usually just after the Yacht Club shut down.

I visited the island's plantation here a few weeks ago, which was pretty cool. This island is very secluded, and there aren't many people. I should be able to provide a more detailed update here in a few weeks!

Just don't get caught spitting your gum on the sidewalk, if you can even have gum at all (I can't remember). You might get sentenced to 90 strokes of the cane!

Those are a few pics of Diego Garcia. When I get a free minute, I will transfer some from my camera and upload them.

We are in Bahrain now! Not much here is photo worthy, though. Just went to the market earlier (Gold Souq), and had a fun time. Now we are just relaxing on base and enjoying ourselves!

Here you go! These are photos from the plantation located on the island of Diego Garcia. This plantation is located on the island, and used to be used for harvesting Coconuts. The original owners and inhabitants of the island were forced to leave by the British Government and were never allowed to return. Due to the short notice provided to the workers to leave, much of this plantation was left exactly as it was being used at the time. It is a ridiculously eery place.

The jail. I couldn't get a good photo of the cells. They were only about 4 foot wide, and maybe 8 foot deep. They had a bed cut from stone, and no window. The bathroom appeared to be a hole in the floor, cut into the corner of the cell. Temperatures of this island routinely hit 100*F, so I could only imagine how horrific it would be having to survive inside of a stone cell with a huge steel door (without a window).

Similar to skeletor. It was a cover-up for a poor tattoo I got quite a few years ago. I basically chatted with the artist for an hour or tow, and told him to come up with an idea that would work. He came to the conclusion that I live life as if I were going to die tomorrow. So, he pitched the idea of a Grim Reaper tattoo, with a skeleton hand underneath holding an hour glass. I haven't done the skeleton hand yet, but it will be started within the next few weeks.
