Delete your 360 cache and for some reason this game HATES it when the 360 is vertical. Mine used to freeze up all the time. Now that my 360 is horizontal, I have not had that problem at all.

I've already tried that and it didn't help (and the console is horizontal). It keeps freezing at the same point and I emailed Bethesda. They've offered a $20 disc replacement. Not sure if I'll do that or get the GOY edition. I would assume that if I get the GOY edition I can pick up where I am now.

GOTY edition gives you new content, but the original content is all still there. I don't see why you couldn't just pick right back up from where you are now. I know you can on the PC version.

The GOTY edition is the bomb. Shivering Isles is a great expansion. I'm busy with Morrowind and it's two expansions at the moment, but I've been watching my daughter play and it looks awesome.

But yeah, I just plopped in the GOTY disc and my old saved game worked fine.

Holy moly I feel dumb. I tried playing again but kept getting stuck in the same spot (portal outside bruma). So I googled around and found nothing of interest in terms of actual solutions. Then I found a forum that suggested cleaning it with a tissue to buff out the scratches. Having nothing to lose I buffed the disc and now it works...I never thought to rub it harder with a soft object but I'll be damned if those light scratches aren't gone.

That's awesome. Had you tried one of those disc repair thingys?

Nah. I had softly rubbed it against something soft like a t-shirt but that's about all. I was afraid of doing more damage to the scratches but today I just got pissed about the freezing.
