It finally happened, I lost about 2.3TB of data on one of my 3TB drives to mechanical failure. Clicking and head scratching on the platters. It was half my TV Show collection I have accumulated in the past decade. I always told myself I would never waste money backing up media such as TV Show files but now that I have lost so much I am regretting my decision. It's been years since I lost a drive to mechanical failure, the last one was at least 6+ years ago but that was a 300GB drive so the loss was not as great as this. From now on I'll buy 2x the storage I need and have all my media drives in a RAID1. Important files will also have its own incremental backups in addition to being on a RAID1 drive.

Haha, I WISH i lost a porn drive instead. Like MSP has always said, porn is like newspapers, no real reason to keep them since a new one is made every single day.
I just lost one at work, and another on it's way out at home. This was Seagates response. The drive i'm complaining about wasn't even a external drive!
I bought a Synology DS413j around Christmas along with three WD 3TB red NAS drives and set them up in a Raid 5 array. Then I transferred all my music, TV shows, and movies to the drive, it took me about five days (I had to upgrade some items in my network) and took the 3TB drive from the computer in put it in the NAS. Now I have 8TB of storage and it's all backed up. Short: BUY A NAS

I don't trust RAID5's after reading how they no longer make sense with 1TB+ drives Also Miller, not really sure what you expected Seagate to do... they give you a replacement drive as per their warranty policy as long as it hasn't expired. They don't owe you anything more than that really.
Yea, I got a replacement drive for the hard drive that failed after a year and a half, replacement drive was reconditioned and failed in 6 months.....
Well, it seems like the terrible news of my drive dying this week was balanced out by the fantastic news of my ISP speeds increasing. I went from 50mb/10mb with 300GB monthly transfer for $75 a month to 110mb/10mb and 1000GB monthly transfer for $80 a month. Now it wont take me as long to recover the lost files.
Wow broadband sounds really expensive in the states. I always thought America was cheap for everything. A 120mb / 12mb connection totally unlimited downloads etc is about $46 here if you get a phone line with them.
Agreed, TWC is finally coming out with 100d/10u who knows wehn i'll see it though, currently paying 75$ for 50/5. my only hope is google fibre!
There's a mass of FO conduit being H drilled into the ground around this area. But knowing century link, the price will be prohibitive. Capitalism fail imho. Otherwise I'm stuck with 7mbs as the very best for my rural area other than paying 1500 bucks to have cable run to my home. Concerning hard drives: is it me, or are HDD's not as durable/reliable as they used to be?
No They're not as durable. Manufacturers used to have 5 year warranties across the board, now your lucky if you get 2 years.
The problem in the US is twofold. First, the US is fucking huge and because we allow interstate companies there's less local competition than in most European countries. Because of the size of the states, it's harder to roll out infrastructure to everyone. This coincides with the second issue: monopolies. Cable and telecom providers often have regional monopolies resulting in reduced competition (which is why Google Fiber is amazing as it's stirring the pot). The answer is going to be wireless tech. While it seems to take forever, the few years that it has taken LTE to roll out across the country is pretty quick by US speed standards. That's where the future of broadband is going to fall, imo.
same boat as you. mine is 25/5 for $60 with twc. and thats only when the shits is not on the fritz. i hope google fiber makes it to my neck of the woods.
Yeah it really sucks living outside a small town. I had 1.5 wireless for a long time and just the jump from that to 16 was astounding. I can't imagine Fiber speeds like some of you have. I can get 25 where I live but it's almost $75. I'd love to bundle my internet and TV, but my cable company's TV still sucks if you want HD. I can barely stand to watch SD anymore.
And when we really get down to it....it's worth it. I wonder what the broadband is like in Kachemak Bay.
