I got the go ahead from the wife to build my dream car, a custom karmann ghia. I started this thread to give you guys an idea of my plans and to bounce ideas around, its also a thread where you guys can ask questions, talk shit, joke around, or simply make fun.

The premise of the build is that I wanted an updated karmann ghia, one that, if VW were to reintroduce the KG it would look or feel similar to this car. What I want is an updated yet 2012 stock looking KG.

What follows are either inspiration pics or pics/links to parts or ideas that I would like to include.

First up are two inspiration cars

The first ghia is well known and was built for around 250k

I don't know anything about this car other than I like the look
    [IMG]

Suspension will be greatly improved via these

I'm looking at a Raby engine that has about 155HP and I'm hoping to get 35mpg with this as it's basically the same engine that is in the porsche 912E that got an average of 38mpg
    http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/...view=article&id=63&catid=51&Itemid=93#details

I want to mate it to a five speed transmission from him as well
    http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=76&Itemid=84

I would love to put some 16" wheels on it as I think that that is the correct size proportion wise for the car but the wheel I want only comes in 17"

The interior will be the toughest part of the car and will make or break it. Before I show you what I want I'm going to show you what I DONT want.
This is stock and it looks nice but it's outdated

    No thanks

Ok so here are some general ideas of what I'm looking at for the interior

First up I know I want these 911 seats, maybe not the same ribbing but the shape is what I'm looking for
    [IMG]

These also look nice as well
    [IMG]

I plan on adding a center console and utilizing a shift gate
    [IMG]

The interior will be mostly black leather with a few chrome elements, it will not be a blinged out or over the top
This is kind of what I'm talking about
    [IMG]

This interior is also nice and not too flashy
    [IMG]

I'll post more when I can think of it.

Sorry man, I am testing new forum software and it was really hard to sync the two databases and still be able to customize it.

I can roll back the forum in a few hours if people want me to. I wanted to try this different system.

I'm curious why ivwshane felt this should be in NSFW, nice boobs not withstanding.

This is a great project! When you said you wanted to modernize the car I had the same ideas with the Porsche wheels and seats! Why not throw a modern Porsche engine/teams in as well as a FMIC in the front? I think the classic looks with the performance and SOUND (I'm sure Dan could help with this in one way or another) would blow people's minds.

Anyway, good luck, take lots of pics ;even of what you think is mundane) and post it up with details. This is gonna be kick add!

I have a nice set of those same seats that I'm going to put in my 912. I think I paid only $300 for them. One is perfect and the other I had to take to an upholstery shop to fix a rip. It was another $100 or so. They look great, they're pretty lightweight too.

Guessing the one on the right is re-upholstered? Those are nice seats.

Nice! I haven't sat in them but I wanted something that felt like it would hold you in a turn and not feel like you were sitting in a recliner.

I don't have pics of mine on here. Mine look 90%+ now though, you can't see where it was fixed (it was along an edge, just re-stitched anyway).

There's a big Porsche swap meet coming up @ Parts Heaven. But Craigslist is where a lot of those deals are at. I see so much good stuff closer where you're living but rarely go that far for anything now.

What do you guys think of this interior? With some tweaks I could see it fitting well with the interior space in the ghia.
