So I needed a phone upon my return to the States and my uncle offered up his old iPhone4. Originally I wanted to stay away from a smartphone, but mostly just because I didn't want to pay big monthly bills to have it. However on the island where I'm moving to we don't have internet yet, so the phone will be how I can stay in contact with emails and such, so I went for it. I now have an iPhone4 and I don't really know what to do with it other than make calls and check my email. Few questions: So I guess I have to make an Apple ID. I don't really want to make... because I'm not a big Apple fan and I don't want those bastards taking over my life, haha. no way around this one eh? What do I need to know about jailbreaking it? I'm on Verizon right now but hoping to ditch that for Page Plus, some prepaid company that uses the Verizon network but will end up costing half the price (for admittedly less talk/data). Now I gotta be all hip about 'apps' and shit. So what should I check out? Keep in mind I don't want to spend money on apps unless I have to. There are those flashlight ones, song ID, all sorts of things I've heard vaguely about but don't know. It automatically added (seemingly at random) a bunch of stupid contacts from FB when I logged in through Safari, I want to remove those and have that contact list just for people I ACTUALLY want to talk to on the phone. How does the iPhone arrange this stuff? When it comes to email, I guess I would just do that through my contacts that are already in my Gmail account... Basically I've never had any kind of smartphone, how do I make the most out of it?
The spam included with smartphone totally astounded me. At times it seems more like a tool for selling me shit I don't want than a com device. Not to mention the privacy issues. I wished I'd never have gotten it really. But now I'm locked into a two year commitment. The toys are neat and all that, but what exactly does a person give up to have one?
I hate to say it since it's a gift, but you could sell that, buy a used 4G HTC Thunderbolt or something on eBay for ~ $60, and root the bejeesus out of it. Probably the main point of rooting is being able to create back-ups and restores, and to switch among rom's (modified OS'es, as it were) A few people I know have had iPhone4's for some time now and swear buy them, so it's win-win. You might start out with a forum app like Tapatalk or whatever the Apple analog is (most apps these days have versions for both Apple and Android, but not all). Some forums have their own custom made Tapatalk apps. Does T3D, anyone? You'll probably want something for uploading pix to the net. I use the Dropbox app but I have no idea what Apple has for that.
It's taking forever to port my number for some stupid reason. I've had this phone for like 3 days now and still can't receive calls on it.... ugh. It's getting more and more tempting to sell though...
It's probably some Verizon version of the phone which explains all the extra crap. My phone has zero provider-related apps (AT&T) but every Verizon I've ever had was loaded with garbage. Once you get the app Store working, you can download tons of cool stuff for free. You pick and choose what you buy, some are listed as Free. Just start with some useful basics like Flashlight, or just start using it and see what you want it to do. There's basically apps for everything and most have free versions. The biggest thing is you'll only want some of them if you have regular access to Wifi or a lot of data, or the apps would be useless or expensive. I know people love/hate both, but you might as well try the iphone still you already have it. Maybe Jailbreaking can remove the Verizon crap. I jailbroke my 3S and it added a lot of functionality.
Just don't get this ap: http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/smartphone-game-may-destroy-your-smartphone-6C10853059 It's a tards-only ap.
I just got an iPhone 4 too, slowly learning how to use it, too… If you're using an app and then press that menu button, is the app still on or does it automatically turn off? Why does my battery seem to be running out of life so quickly? And do apps use data?
GG - the app still runs in the backround.and will continue to do until you either restart the phone, force it to close, or load so many other apps before going back to it that it runs out of memory and clears it. For battery -- is it a new or used phone? Used phones will probably have massively degraded battery life. If it's new, what are you seeing for battery life? If you're browsing and using apps on-and-off, you can probably use it all day without charging. If you're sitting in front of it playing a 3D game or movie non-stop, it will die in a few hours. You can turn off extra stuff you aren't using to save battery life (Wifi, bluetooth, GPS, all data/airplane mode etc) And "do apps use data", do you mean data transfer or internal storage space? Depending on the app it could be a lot of neither or both, but all apps use at least a small amoutn of storage space.
yes, some aps use data whether you want them too or not. One of the biggest things I had to learn is how to turn off the "bloat" (aps I didn't want or would never use) that came with my phone. My battery life sucked balls right out of the box. My charge cycle went from 10 hours all the way to more than 2 days because all those shit aps were eating the battery by running in the back ground.
It's a brand new phone, I guess I have to actually logout/close games and other apps. Well ok, so my data plan is 2gb data for $60/month so what I mean by "do apps use data" is do apps like this tapatalk one use Internet data? And how big is 2gb's ?
Yes that app would use data, but not much at all. What's going to use the most is watching videos on sites like Youtube or downloading lots and lots of big apps (but you can only download a 50 MB app over data, otherwise you need to use Wifi). If you're concerned about data usage use Wifi whenever possible. 2 GB is probably a lot for most people, but people here / like me would maybe use 5 GB a month./ You can check how much data you're using in the Settings / About / Usage or something..
Ahhh that's good to know I haven't watched a single video on here except ones I've made of the kids… what about emailing pictures or posting them on here? Would that use up a lot of data?
Nah that's pretty small stuff. Emailing, as long as it's not full resolution (it'll ask you when you send it).. 2 GB would be over 2000 images per month @ 1 MB. I usually send 0.1 MB (100 KB) images or so which would be 20,000
