How did you decide to get a house (or any big purchase?)

    Hey guys,

I'm curious how you came about getting a house. The decision criteria and what drove you?

I'm longing for a place with a garage because i want to tinker with stuff and learn more about cars. I also just want a bigger place. I currently rent for really cheap in a nice neighborhood close to work.

Unfortunately I will either have to get a place on the southside close to Midway airport or be house rich and poor on the northside. So currently I'm looking at neighborhood areas on the southside of Chicago and I found some quiet places.

I don't want to move to far from the city mainly because all the IT jobs are here and I don't want to commute 50+ miles.

For me it was two things that coincided. I got out of a long term relationship where the woman owned the house and as it crumbled I bounced back and forth between her place and the local singles apt. complex. So that was a sort of "never again" deal. About that time I reached a level of professional and personal, er, uh-- for lack of a better term-- maturity. I had bullet-proof credit, and since this woman had been a financial drain, more disposable cash. Then when I found a nice place that was seriously under-valued, it was a no-brainer. (Three things?)

My two cents-- don't rush and don't settle, and get pre-appoved on the credit side.

Find where the trains go. My brother lives in the NW suburbs and takes the train to downtown every day.

Schaumburg can be awesome, Palatine is NW and nice, Willowbrook/Bolingbrook are south and nice.

I was living the single awesome life and having more sex than should be humanly allowed. I then met a women who I thought was perfect for me and decided I was going to get her pregnant so I did. At the time I was living in an apartment living up life but then when she became pregnant and I immediately sold off all my toys and bought a house. I had perfect credit at the time so it was not that hard but the women baring my child was the deciding factor to buy my house.

My best mate called me up and said i'm going to sell you a house, the rest was history. Much more satisfying owning something as opposed to paying off someone elses mortgage.

The only homes I bought, ownership was decided by divorce attorneys and the courts. "She got the mine, I got the shaft". Two times. o_O

Now it's a normal thing to do, back then, not so much.
