Actually we're both wrong. According to Subaru's website, It's 2.5L 265hp for the 2008 WRX. We failed....

265 is the 09 wrx not the 08 the 08 came with a softer suspension and 20 hp less and the 08 lacks one body line compared to the 09

You know I was in the states two weeks ago and it was funny watching the car adverts boast about being able to get 30mpg. I don't think 30mpg is anything to boast about on a eco car. 60mpg yes, but not 30mpg.

See if you can watch S12 Ep04 of top gear they do a challenge based on mpg.
Hammond drives a VW Polo blue motion, which does 74mpg (averaged 80mpg in the end). Even the twin turbo Jag Clarkson drives got there in the end which was 836 miles with 120miles left of fuel still in the tank.

PS my car gets about 52mpg, 2.2tDi

I can fuck bigred's sister very comfortably in the backseat of a '08 WRX while waiting for the 10psi turbo to spool. Not bad, in my opinion.

I hate to over state this, but you are talking about a V6 which(obviously sorry) will consume more fuel than a 4 cylinder. As well how and where, city or country, the car is driven will also impact on fuel efficiency.
    Cheers

Several factors are going on here.

First, cars in the states are heavier not just because of our preference for larger cars but also due to slightly higher impact requirements on safety tests. (Some of which are up to 10 mph higher on side impacts) (Look at comparable Jetta's stateside vs in the UK. The US' Jetta is about 500 lbs heaiver.)

Second, 1 US gallon = 0.83267384 Imperial gallons. That means you're adding an extra 10% of efficiency by your straight across the board comparison. ;)

Third, the US has higher emissions standards than most of Europe especially in California. Diesel engines have to be clean diesel which both adds price to the model and lowers the efficiency of the engine.

Fourth, there's no demand for super high fuel efficiency vehicles in the states yet. A combination of being the largest consumer of oil and having some of the lowest taxes on fuel worldwide means that we don't mind our vehicles getting 20 mpg when gas is < $3.00 a gallon.

No worries, people keep asking about it. Hell, I'm tempted to put up an announcement somewhere. :p
