A mouse would be nice to use when surfing the web too. All the fingerprints would get messy on the screen

See, looking at using this device the way I use my current netbook and it's pretty attractive, phone OS or not. Stuff I do on my netbook most = surf the web, read email, etc. Although I do play Settlers of Catan on it too, so I guess I'd be out of luck there... :-k

The price would have been justifiable if they gave more storage support/USB and camera for conf... However at 16 gig with 3g the price seem high.

Personally if i am getting some thing for 600+, i much rather get a netbook with 3g support, faster processor i3/i5 maybe and more ram, so i can run multiple applications. IMHO.

i thought the price would be way more. it does just seem like an oversized iphone though. I'd just rather have an iphone so I could carry it everywhere. I'd rather just use a netbook or laptop for something that large.

I'm disappointed there's not a camera on it, but I guess there wouldn't be anything to add to the next version if they had a camera right out the gate.

haha, and then they can announce 4 new colors in another keynote. Then a few months later they will announce support for something everyone thought should have been in the first model. Good 'ole Apple dangling the carrot from the stick.

For now yeah; By the time apple put all the right things in i-pad like extra storage/SD, USB, Camera for conference, Flash and multitasking support. I am sure we will have net-book with i3 for less then or equal to I-pad price.
I currently have HP 311 net-book. N280, Nvidia-ION with 3 gig fast and very good at multitasking, and for gaming on the run. (not for high end gaming). I enjoy playing torchlight on it and occasional Star Craft.

EDIT: Just curious do I-Pad have Text to Speech.

Apple had to use the name ipad because itablet is already taken and in current use.

With regards to the device itself...eh.

For me, it's too big. Remove the black boarder and it's perfect.
Hardware wise it's nothing revolutionary but apple isn't about revolutionary hardware, it's the software and where this will do good is for those that read books, magazines, and news papers.
The problem though, is that those people are a dieing breed.

    Lastly.....SUCK IT VERIZON FAN BOYS!

Flash is an abomination. With HTML5 supporting streaming video a la Youtube and Silverlight being a capable alternative I hope that Flash dies off quickly.

So you would replace flash with silverlight? Though I don't mind it, thats just dumb. That is like swapping a wolf for a tiger.

No one had really brought this up, but you know lcd screens suck in direct sunlight. So if you wanted to read outside with the iPad, good luck. Not only would the glare on the screen make it hard, the screen would be so washed out you couldnt read anything anyways.

So ultimately it is a big ipod touch with half hearted implementations of the thing is it supposedly supposed to do well. From reading books, to playing games (motion controls suck for most games), to web surfing (no flash), to video playback (limited to certain codecs), to music playback (if you want streaming music, tough luck using it with other apps), and so on. You get the point.

The iPod in basic form is just another MP3 player. It's all about marketing, placement and fashion.

Otherwise, yeah, in any other company's hands, it is just the techno tablet.

lol, no on my iPod touch actually. I had only just woke up, and was reading all the news about the iPad in bed! :p

And if only this thing had an infra-red sensor, imagine using this as a customized universal remote for your home theatre. It would be the most ultimate coffee table accessory then!

As far as my actual phone lurker: I am stuck with a stupid POS blackberry storm like yours remember? (Only you seem to love yours!) I had the thing replaced (with a brand new one) a few weeks ago through warranty; after the LCD went out. This new one is just as slow and buggy as the old POS. I hope it breaks beyond use again soon so I can go and bitch and moan to Vodafone to give me something other than a blackberry (maybe the next revision iPhone? ;))

I liked my BB Storm till I saw my friend's new touchscreen driod in action for a full 40 minutes.

Wow, that's a great phone! It has better apps than the iPhone because of open source. I tried to explain "open-source" to him but I dont think he understood how awesome it was...

I tell my friend I hate his phone. ;) But
    i actually love it.

Yeah well at this stage I can happily say I will never ever purchase a blackberry ever again thanks to the storm. I don't care how good their non touch screen phones are; the experience I have had with the BB os has been nothing short of horrible. It feels like I am using the equivalent of windows 3.1 every time I try to do something on my phone. (Out-fucking-dated.)

Anyway, lets get back on track..... where were we? Oh that's right, everyone was hating the crap out of the iPad.. even though, if it had a fleshlight attachment they would never buy an apple product.

    Yes. ok. ;)

Back on topic, I don't think the price is out of line because if you look at how Apple supports its latest products, you would know Apple doesn't put out just harware but the whole mechanized entity to support it and yhr ptoduct itself. They build the product but don't expect just the hardware specs to justify the price. Any of us can see right through that.

After all, the iP od would just be another mp3 player and the iphone just another phone if it wasn't for Apple's follow through...

Remember his is the dividing line between PCs ans Apple:

PC builders work around the OS to bring you the total solution while working with hundreds of hardware manufacturers.

Apple develops their own hardware and in conjunction with 3rd parties while trying to keep hardware parts PC friendly but limiting the amount of manufacturers down to keep stability.

Furthurmore the OS is built aound those known limited parameters to keep system errors low.

In the end, you pay for the stability and basically, customization.

If you see limiting your suppliers, as the car world does, as cutomization so the machine works as the engineer wants it to, why is that a bad thing?

Yes we see the new product but what has yet to bee seen is the most important part; the supporting structure they have planned.
