Sure. Both alcohol and drug cartels. However, I think public opinion is strong enough that we'll see a domino effect of states legalizing, especially in the west, that the federal government will be forced to reschedule it. And in a long shot, maybe they'll reschedule the other ones properly as well.

I don't think marijuana and alcohol would compete against each other if marijuana prohibition ended. There's a slight overlap in the market of people who want to "feel different", but most of the regular consumers of alcohol would probably just stick to alcohol. Marijuana definitely isn't for everyone, but I do think some of the anxiety associated with it stems from its illegality. Even so, people will always love their booze.

Also, this is supposedly the first guy to buy legal, recreational marijuana:

I'm betting there will soon be vested interests who see this movement as a chance to make pot legal. It's a cash cow for cash-strapped States, and has an enthusiastically unmotivated support base ;), and it's opposition is losing steam, being distracted by their other losing propositions such as gay marriage.

NPR was talking about this today, saying that people are sad they have nowhere to smoke, apparently there's a hefty fine for smoking on the street or in a park. The guy says he's worried there will be an increased use in edibles which tend to have more ill effects for casual users. Thoughts Mr. Jubal? What's the reaction like in Colorado? :)

You could have touristy boutique hotels or resorts where people could smoke openly and go see laser shows or live improv comedy or attend meditation classes or whatever. Tommy Chong should open one so he can recoup some of the year he lost at the hands of the Nazi prick John Ashcroft.
    Sparky says thanks for this.

The problem is that smoke is a nuisance whether it be cigarette, cigar or marijuana. When you drink, unless you're completely retarded and spill your drink on someone they aren't directly affected by the substance. And even then, unlike marijuana that gives contact highs, you can't get a contact buzz. I've walked through plenty of stairwells living and working in Denver and exited with a bit of a contact buzz because medical grade marijuana is insanely strong stuff.

As for no place to smoke, like alcohol, you just need to look for places to consume it not at home:

$70 + 20% taxes is over 300% previous prices. Also, there's a backlog of at least 50 some-odd shops in the Denver area awaiting licences. Things will stabilize once their crops are sellable.

Is that not the clip I linked? It isn't even legal in your state Dan!

Also, one week update. The world has not ended in Colorado and people still show up to work.

But.................the pot is running out! Oh No!
That may be the one thing I see going bad: The state regulating the amount of supply creating a huge deficit between supply and demand.
With a tax that is based on percentage of sale price, the revenue for the state benefits a huge amount by keeping those prices extremely high.
There would be no incentive at all for the state to increase the amount of crops legally allowed in order to meet demand.

I think it's a huge waste of cash for states to fight the inevitable, but they still do.
I wonder what the dollar figure is for the last twenty years of incarceration and law enforcement of
    pot illegality.

Trillions. Related, one of the smaller counties to allow sales and has two shops reported $1 million in receipts in the first two months.

Shit, those have got to be the coolest third graders alive. Or at least in the country.

Remember how bad ass you thought someone was in third grade if you even KNEW they smoked a cigarette at least once. Much less smoking in the school bathroom. Much less replacing cigarette with weed. Damn. I would be so jealous if I was 8 again.
