Updated to new graphics drivers from Gateway and the WoW login doesn't display it's menus.

Can't tell what the drivers did except make the computer recognize the card as a 8800m GTS instead of a 8800 GT.

You've already tried the drivers from the Nvidia website I assume. The Nvidia Geforce and Nvidia Geforce Go drivers are different, so maybe you had the wrong one?

Do you think many of the problems you're upset about are Vista issues or complaints about the hardware in that notebook itself? Maybe you should dual boot XP and see how it does if you can find drivers. :)

Therein lies one of the problems - no XP audio drivers from Gateway thus far. :(

On the subject of Best Buy...

I just dropped off my camera to be serviced. It has a 4-year warranty. Anyway, I read the wall carefully and the price match on notebooks is indeed listed a being the same as the return policy: 14 days. I couldn't believe the lack of respect the employees at my local store had for the hardware they were handling. They were flipping powered-notebooks over repeatedly as if they didn't have moving parts.

In the time I was there, two customers in front of me both complained about the lousy service and said they'd never shop at Best Buy again. The reaction from the two techs was basically "well whatever we don't care" -- one asked to see a manager and the guy made her wait around for 30 minutes before talking to someone.

I saw both of the techs say basically, "well, you're screwed, deal with it" to customers who clearly bought products in the past few months. What kind of crappy service is that? How those people never get fired is beyond me, but I can definitely understand how hard it is to find and keep quality techs at a place like that. :)

That fix got WoW working again.

The system hangs and explorer.exe crashing are still happening. A new one: system hangs when doing ctrl alt del as well (intending to bring up task manager - have a shortcut to that app on my desktop now).

I also notice that there's no Print Screen button. That or I'm blind and can't find it.

Seems the only thing it's been smooth at doing is playing games, but the performance isn't mind blowing. I'm about to run Hellgate London. The explosions in that game, like the Marksman's napalm strike, brings my other computer to a near grinding halt FPS-wise with min settings. We'll see on this comp.

Edit: Hellgate gives me an error message saying (my video card) is below min requirements for Vista and makes me DL a virtual mem hotfix and recommended getting the lastest service pack... I reluctantly DLed the hotfix and I'm applying the Vista SP1 RC right now, before I leave for work.

And I knew Best Buy wouldn't post my bad review.

Wow, this forum is 23 minutes fast. It's like my desktop which is probably like that because I lived 2 years overseas where they had 220v @ 50Hz rather than 120V @ 60 Hz for electricity.

Well, I may hold back and see how those XP drivers come along. From what you're saying I might be better off with the Dell. For about the same money I could get a 2-2.2 Core 2 Duo, 3GB of DDR2, and an Nvidia 8600GT. Not as good of a game card, and the screen is only 15", but it's solid and has the 3 year warranty. In Oblivion the extra CPU horsepower might almost balance things out.

They should really put faster RAM in these faster models.

Well, to hell with Best Buy. Gateway has offered me the Gateway Computers: Store - Product Details for Gateway® P-171S FX Edition for $1399. 200 bucks below list. Tag on the 3 year warranty and shipping and it comes to $1570. 28 bucks cheaper than what Best Buy would sell with a 400mhz slower CPU and without the fingerprint reader. Slam dunk. I'm going to pester my wife over dinner, I think I'll be ordering this bad boy shortly.

I guess my laptop needed a burn in or something. I guess things have cached and things are running relatively smoothly. I have the RC for Vista SP1 installed and I taped a needle across my Fn and Ctrl key to help alleviate the button swap thing. I'll search up a laptop keyboard hack later if I want to make it permanent.

Glad to hear it. Have you seen what Best Buys is charging for your exact laptop this week? $1699.99! I guess they finally figured out it was a steal at what they were charging.

Well, I just ordered mine. I got the P-171S FX with the 2ghz Core 2 Duo and fingerprint reader. Otherwise it's identical to the P-6831FX. The best part is I was able to get Gateway to honor their original quote of $1399. The week after Best Buy cranked the price of the P-6831FX up to $1,699, so I figured I was fucked. It took several sales people in the end, but I got lucky. :D

Yep, same chassis. It's got a fingerprint reader too, which I guess will be neat to play with. Check out this great guide for the Gateway P-series:

    FAQ/Mod/Upgrade/Support Thread: GATEWAY P-6831 FX\ P-171S/X/XL FX - NotebookForums.com

Mine doesn't ship until the 1st week of March so I have to wait a while. The 6 months same-as-cash financing was a pleasant surprise as well.

And if anybody is interested in picking the P-6832FX from Best Buy it's supposed to go back on sale this weekend for $1199. What a deal...

That's awesome man. Such bang for your buck, it's unbelievable. You'll have to keep us posted when it arrives, first impressions and whatnot.

Oh yeah, full review coming. Beyond the 8800MGTS video card, you want to hear the most amazing thing I found? It has a 2nd SATA bay sitting empty. I can slap in a 2nd hard drive and mirror or stripe it! Unbelievable. Dell better start dropping the price of their entry level 1730s...

I'll be damned, the deal actually got sweeter today! I stumbled on a thread on Notebookforums.com which mentioned a particular Gateway sales rep who was offering 20% off all the P-171 series laptops. So I emailed him and he confirmed it. I then emailed my sales rep and after a little fuss he honored it! So that $1,599 laptop is now only going to cost me $1280! 120 bucks less roughly than the deal I had originally. :D

Thanks, I'm stoked. And if anybody is interested Best Buy did drop the price of the P-6831FX to $1199 in their Sunday ad. 18 months same as cash financing too.

No joke. I've emailed and threatened to cancel the order. It's still such a good deal though I probably won't. I priced a Dell XPS 1530 and it's almost exactly the same price as the Gateway, but has a smaller screen, lower VGA card (8600), less hard drive space, less RAM, etc.

Complaining will put me towards the top of the ship list though. But if Dell releases something competitive at that price I may jump ship.
