My mouth is watering for this thing. If nobody here bites on my Macbook, or the wife doesn't want it, I foresee an eBay auction starting this weekend.

That review you posted had a funny blurb about Vista, check it out:

I'll probably wipe it and dual boot with XP immediately.

The pictures to me look like it's closer to a 4:3 style monitor for some reason. I guess that's just an illusion though

Well, now that the Macbook is official "sold" I can start thinking about a new laptop. I think I'll wait a month or so to see if Dell releases their models with the 8800 GPU. I get a discount from Dell, plus their XPS series through work comes with a 3 year warranty. Coupled with the fact that I'm Dell certified, it would be total piece of mind. Next day parts for 3 years, that I could install myself.

    I just had to brag.

Found a great deal on this laptop. BNIB for 900$ from some guy who won in at a contest. That's like 400$ off. Pretty rocking imo. Now I just have to figure out what I need it for :)

Looks like I'll get a chance to try out Vista too...

Nice price. I'm not a big HP person though, my friend went through 3 of them so far due to quality issues.

I hope I don't run into the same problem. My last laptop's monitor (an Acer) died on me after only 13 months (how convenient for Acer. What I've read about this HP has been positive as far as build quality goes, but I would've said the same of my old Acer until the LCD suddenly died right in front of my eyes, so who really knows what your gunna get.

Oh, maybe I can get $100 and game... kind of doubting it because I had to use my debit card to buy it instead of my credit card.

    Hell, it's worth a try.

I went up to Best Buy today and put my hands on this thing, very cool. It's a lot bigger than my Macbook, and the shiny black palm rests are going to drive me nuts, but the specs are just too good to pass up.

I'm still searching from some Oblivion benchmarks though. If it'll run Oblivion well I can replace my desktop and consolidate.

Also, check out vLite. It's on the OS recovery disk. Lets you make a new windows vista boot disk integrating updates and removing unwanted components like Windows Media Center, etc.

You should be able to. Best Buy's policy used to be to match the price if it drops within 30 days. It might be 14 days on notebooks...

Yea, I read up on it. Seems all I have to do is call 1-888-BestBuy.

55 fps in Oblivion? Oh yeah, this is a done deal. I'll still wait a month or so to see what other vendors bring to market, but this laptop is going to be hard to beat.

One peeve that I cannot stand so far is the new placement of the ctrl keys. I primarily use the left one and my hand gets put into an EXTREMELY uncomfortable position trying to do Ctrl+1 with my pinky on it (such as assigning a group # in a RTS game).

It makes me want to plug in a real keyboard or just switch to my desktop when playing games.

Remapping keys on (crap) Laptop keyboard

According to this, it seems people have this problem with Lenovo laptops. Fn tied directly to bios so it can't be remapped with software.

I guess it's time to find a clean solution to tying the 2 keys together.

I'll probably be OK with the keyboard. Having been using small Dell D600-630 keyboards for years, and lately my Macbook keyboard, that Gateway one seemed downright large and luxurious.

I just got off the phone with Best Buy customer service regarding a price match and they really strong-armed me, denying a price match, since my ship date was 15 days ago. I tried to reason with them and quote the policy from the price match and it ended up being an argument over semantics how their "way of reading policy" states the days that count start from this this day rather than another day that I thought would qualify.

I ended up getting their top ranking supervisor for their day shift, Gord D (is this really his name?). He kept repeating there's no argument and he couldn't help. I said what would be the difference if I worked a refund and repurchased, but he warned me there would be 15% restocking fee on open products (at least $200).

sounds like Best Buy. They are such ass hats. It's a fun store to poke around in but actually buying something from them is out of the questions with their awful customer service.

Vashar, where do you live? You can PM me if you don't want to state here. The reason I ask is because I have a few friends that are/were Best Buy managers and might be able to help. I don't know how much they'd help if it was ordered online though.

If you believe you're in their policy limits, 1-888-Bestbuy should get you your money back. If they were only required to do it for 14-days and you ordered it 15-days back (or whatever) you might be SOL though...

On another note: I actually just posted a bad review on their site to discourage people from buying this laptop from them. We'll see if it passes their screening.

Wow, sorry to hear you've had so many problems. Most I would blame on Vista, or perhaps even some defect in your laptop specifically. I'd give Gateway tech support a call, I've had decent luck with them. The fact that they don't have XP drivers for some things is troubling, because that was my plan all along - wipe Vista and at the very least dual boot. But one thing is for sure, Best Buy's service is terrible. I would box the laptop up, take it to the retail store, and raise your voice. You can ALWAYS get better results in person than over the phone.

That's a very detailed review. Thanks for sharing it. I've always hated big notebooks for their weight and lack of portability, but I was surprised to hear it doesn't even have the exceptional performance you'd *assume* it would have given its specs. I guess notebooks still suffer from the same things they always have - slow hard drives and crappy keyboards. This wasn't a miracle but sounded nice for the money. I wasn't going to buy one anyway, but I'll be sure to ward off anyone that thinks this is a good deal now.

Gateway has, in my opinion, been one of the lower quality brands of notebooks for years. Having worked at a service department during the eMachines/Gateway merger, I must have seen triple the rate of problems with cases and screens on these brands compared with its competitive partners, particularly HP and IBM.

My recent notebook purchase was the complete opposite end of the spectrum (see this thread: http://www.tweak3d.net/forums/tech/greetings-my-eeepc-32498) -- this thing wouldn't play games and only has 800x480 resolution, but the reason I bought it was so I'd have something very lightweight and durable. I used it last night in bed to browse the forums, and I wrote some documents when I woke up this morning before getting out of the bed. The difference between big notebooks and small notebooks is huge, though. One's focused on power in a relatively small package (9 lbs though, yeesh!) and the other is more about battery life and versatility. It sucks you simply cannot have both without major compromises.
