What do you feel is the role of the government and why? Should they do what is popular or do what will benefit the country and people?

I believe governments exist to represent the people and to provide a defense against forgein countries.

Government is for the people by the people, (well, the male, rich, white, christian ones mostly...) and it ought to represent the peoples interest. So from that it seems the government should do what its people want. It is just a matter of getting people to see what the best option is, get the people to support it, then you can have both.

It does not work this way however.

it'd be kool if we all had personal voting remote controls so we can do somewhat instantaneous decisions as a country. like the president will go on the air and ask,"Should we go to war?". then we can all hit 'yes' or 'no' and vote and that would be the decision. and the President's telecast would be sponsored by Ford and Coca-Cola.

In a eutopian society doing what's best for the people is what the people want. If a government exists only to do what's best in their mind, regardless of the people's wishes then that's borderline socialism. Kind of like Mom making you finish all of your broccolli.

A comedian by the name of Robert Klein years ago said, "Imagine if Neil Armstrong had chosen a different quote before stepping on the moon. He could have been a millionaire. Instead of (One step for man) what if he had shouted Coca-Cola as he stepped off the ladder?"

Doing what is best for the people is a point of view, for some people doing what is best for your people involves the killing of millions. But doing what the people want may involve the killing of anyone not conforming to their religion. How about you add do what is right and abides to a decent code of ethics.

The government's role should be to stay the fuck out of my basement. At this point their listening devices are interfering with my radio and even my coffee maker. Can you believe that shit? What on earth are these dipshits beaming through my walls? Take a trip to Radio Shack, assholes.

Choice A is basically autocracy. Choice B is the democratic choice...

well the idea is probably using the Greatest Happiness Principle so "Doing what is best for the people is a point of view" sort of doesnt work out as a good because code of ethics doesnt apply to the GHP.

    Heil! Errr, I mean, you're right... 8-[

Who's to say what is right? Therein lies the rub - it's a point of view. I may think that stuffing you in a trunk and interogating your for six months is in the best interest of the people, but you may not agree...

This statement is a huge generalization. I know to a certain point what I want out of government, and it is unfair to say that all of "the people" don't know what they want.

However, I don't disagree that the state of our population is in many cases utter stupidity.

The options are inadequate... the governments role is to keep order of the complex society... whether its doing what people want or what someone thinks people need... thats just ways of keeping order.... neither option is really attractive and something in between the two is needed....
