What do you guys think about this idea? As much as I love smoking weed I feel like if you're taking government assistance you shouldn't have disposable income for drugs or alcohol. Then again some argue that the government is violating personal rights and it is a blatant attack on people who take government assistance. http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=16&articleid=20100203_12_0_OKLAHO415792
I think it's an awesome idea. There is a huge percentage of people on government assistance that are enabled to sell drugs. The advent of the debit accounts may have reduced the selling of food stamps for cash which helps. The way I see it, if hard working, law abiding citizens are required to pass drug screning to get and keep jobs, then why not the leeches?
Personally I think its a great idea. I don't need either. I drink probably 2 times a month, if that, and smoke my one to times a year that i could probably live without. Last time i smoked was last halloween when I was doin the drug test for my job
Fourth amendment violation if it's done without reasonable suspicion, i.e. blanket testing on all those in the system.
im sure it would take care of %90 of them. I dont care what they do but dont do it on the workin mans dime
Exactly. I don't care how they have to dress it up, but mandatory drug testing for welfare recipients would be awesome. Because let's be clear, the savings from punting the druggies would more than cover the cost of screening.
Treat every poor person like criminals. Yah, real nice huh? Anyone remember that article I posted a while back about the fact something like 50% of Americans have used welfare during their lives?
I'm posting this without doing any real critical thinking (because that's how I usually roll) so excuse me if I'm an idiot but.. If they required a drug test when you apply for welfare.. how is it any different than the government asking for a pee test when applying for a government job?
can't look it up I'm onu phone but there is an ACLU case that prevents gov jobs from drug testing unless it's a security job like cops ambulances and fire fighters. Due to the 4th amendment
It wouldn't be any different that the anti drug policies of most all employers. Mandetory drug testing to get a job here. You have to be clean to work, why not to suck a government tit?
I agree that it should be a requirement of any person taking welfare. I think the amount of people that either wouldn't even bother applying, or the idiots it actually catches, would offset the costs.
I have to piss for my job and I work there. Heaven forbid we piss test people who don't work, get a handout and buy drugs with that money. I forget if I mentioned it here but someone told me of a scam food stampers would do: they'd take all of their stamps and purchase meat. Let it sit out for days and return it as "bad" and the store refunded them in cash to use for drugs/alcohol.
^ Lots of corner stores and small shops in the hood take food stamps for alcohol, and a few sell weed & crack out of them.
What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Let's drug test all the Wall Street pukes, too. Let's at least drug test everyone who got a bonus with bail-out money. These assholes benefit from our "System" 1,000-times more than any welfare slag. For that matter, we should just drug test everyone who makes over $300,000 a year. Fuck it, let's drug test EVERYONE. The Bill of Rights is utter bullshit anyway, right? If anything, this issue just illustrates how idiotic our drug policies are and how much we've sold out our rights.
Can't find the ACLU one but Chandler v. Miller, Governor of Georgia et al. 1997 the court decided it was unconstitutional for Georgia to require political candidate to submit a drug test before seeking office. And once again, I am not surprised that a forum that is full of self-professed Libertarians is so willing to cast aside the constitutional rights of poor individuals.
I say we just do a full on blanket drug test of every US citizen. If somebody gets caught we deport them to Cuba or we wait until California slides into the ocean and we could just send them all there! Oooooo Australia would work too. If Australia was good enough for English criminals, shouldn't it be good enough for ours?
There's a difference between a person on welfare trying to get back on their feet and a person receiving welfare from the state and spending it on crack and booze. This isn't violating shit. What rights? You're accepting government money and squandering it on a pathetic life. Fuck your rights, you're receiving government assistance for doing nothing. This is not the same as a drug test for a job or otherwise. That is bullshit and invasion of personal freedom. Drug tests for welfare sound smart and economical. Ps. Fuck the ACLU.
