Obama is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Being anything other than totally supportive of Israel is the third-rail in politics, as you gain the active opposition of both the Literalist Christian community AND the otherwise liberal Jewish community, which adds up to a huge voting block, and a very organized (and well-funded) lobbying block. Privately, the Obama administration is furious with Netanyahoo (misspelling intentional) over this, but they're trying to patch up already rocky relations with Israel so they can have more leverage in the peace talks.

Israel is really the big loser, this time. Nothing is going to patch over the loss of Turkey as a key ally in the Middle East, and unlike the invasion of Gaza a while back, Israel gets NOTHING positive out of this act. Using a sledgehammer to set a thumbtack in cork-board is the very definition of the phrase "misuse of force". Those elite commandos had NO EXPERIENCE in the type of activity they were called upon to do, and so it's only natural that things went to heck in a handbasket from the get-go.

yeah, they're dicks, but there is a fucking blockade. They warned the ship and then when they boarded they were attacked (supposedly). Did anyone think they were going to airdrop puppies and rainbows on a ship trying to run a blockade?
They need to go in and wipe hamas the fuck out so everything can start moving on. The whole situation is stupid right now

They already tried that, with a spectacular lack of success.

Israel can do no wrong guys.

Also didn't this all happen in international waters? That sounds like a super big no no.

Yet me ask: Are blockades illegal now?
If so, this country has a lot to answer for.
Tex pointed it out- this is a blockade. Blockades have consequences for ignoring them.

The reality is that arms are being smuggled in with the aid shipments. How the Israelis handled it could have been a lot better, but I don't blame them for going after the smugglers. It's like when insurgents hide amongst the populace. Kill 'em all and let Jah sort them out. ;)

That said, I'm pretty anti-Israeli at this point. The Arabs got fucked back in '48.

I'm not anti Israeli but I don't believe in giving them special treatment.

If they want nuclear arms, fine but don't complain when your "enemies" want/have them.

If it weren't for aledged nukes in Isreal's possesion, they would not exist. Personally, I want to see a test of one of thier firecrackers. Curiousity, not malevelance. too bad there's so much crap associated with
lighting one up. I'd like to see what everyone has and who has the best.

^^^ I dunno, they've successfully beaten back the Arabs time and again with conventional weapons.

    Israel had a blockade

This group knew about it and ignored multiple attempts to have the aid supplies inspected at an Israeli port before being transferred to Gaza

The group hired militants to pose as aid workers and ambush the interdiction teams when they arrived on the ships.

The group has known ties to multiple terrorist groups.

This shit was planned out to make Israel look bad. Fuck everyone else, i'm more concerned about the injured Israeli soldiers than i am about that trash group seeking publicity. Dump their bodies overboard and be done with it.

Edit: from the article, gotta love the hardass jews

Two more boats are on their way to challenge the blockade in the coming days and the Irish government has urged Israel to allow the Irish-owned MV Rachel Corrie to reach Gaza. Meanwhile a top Israeli naval commander told the Jerusalem Post “Next time we’ll use more force”.

Right now, I don't trust anything that anybody says. So far as I'm concerned, any story from anyone involved in this is just that; a story. Ranger's post may be true... or it may be weapons of mass destruction. We'll never know at this point, because everyone involved has a vested interest in their own story.

Oh, and I don't like hard-ass anyone, since the hardness of their asses seems to come from the ossification of their brains. :)

Israel already looks bad because of the Gaza blockade and the many other inventive ways they have of "defending themselves". It was entirely within their power to avoid any confrontation in this case. It doesn't matter if the people onboard planned this or not, the Israelis came up with a stupid plan and they only have themselves to blame for the outcome.

Yeah, "more force" is certain to result in a better outcome...maybe they'll just torpedo the ships this time?

I've always had a great deal of contempt for both sides of this conflict, but more and more over the past few years I've begun to think Israel deserves most of the blame for perpetuating it. They don't seem interested in a negotiated settlement at all and would rather pick fights instead. If they continue acting this way they're going to be a in a world of shit when their US support and protection inevitably disappears at some point in the future.

The population in the middle east only has so much area that is habitable, it's not like USA or EU. They continue to fuck like rabbits: http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6522FS20100603?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews&rpc=76 and need a place to put the future rabbits.
    now, about those blockades:
OK, suppose you come up to a police roadblock. You are showing probable cause for search. You refuse to submit to a search and produce a weapon. What the heck do you beieve the police are going to do?
Should it matter that you announced to the world that you're going to ignore the police roadblock?

Israel is a state that, by historical facts, will never be destroyed or defeated. Let us not forget the 6 day war:

Shit, their people went through the holocaust and are still thriving...

Right or wrong, there is a blockade, and they knew damn well what they were getting into. If the blockade is wrong/illegal, international powers need to step in and do something about it, not a bunch of dipshits on a humanitarian mission

yeah, I meant do it right (whatever right is in this situation)

If they are smuggling weapons in I think it is justified to have a blockade. On the other hand, there are a few Canadians now being held in Israel that were nabbed off the boats. The one I read about was an engineer going to Gaza to help them drill water wells. Canadians aren't terrorists, come on! We just want hockey, maple syrup and beer!

How so? Destroying a state tends to be a hell of a lot easier than destroying a people.

Completely different situation. Police in democratic countries have a legal basis for their actions. Being extremely generous, the best you could say about the boarding operation is that its legality was arguable.

The blockade has been condemned since it began by numerous international organisations, governments, charities and ordinary people around the world! This is hardly the first time it's been in the news. The single main reason nobody has been able to do anything about it is because Israel is lucky enough to enjoy the seemingly unconditional backing of the United States. The amount of influence they have over American politicians is absolutely shocking, even in a field where corruption and lobbying are commonplace.

Israel also has a tradition of ignoring UN resolutions it doesn't like, and as this operation showed they are not fans of obeying international laws either, so short of starting a war with them I don't really know what you expect the rest of the world to do except wait for the Israeli government to stop acting like idiots. I have no sympathy for them at all.

Exactly right. The U.S. used blockades against the Germans and the Japanese in international waters because we were at war. Israel is at war as well......everyday. Israel did nothing wrong here.

Crap. Israel has not declared war against Turkey, have they? So how can you possibly attempt to compare this to WW2, where all the participants were nation states who had legally declared war on each other?

Israel is at war with Hamas. The current government of Turkey which used to be allies with the US and Israel have been trying to politically become closer with Iran. Iran as you know wants the complete and utter destruction of Israel. Even VP Biden agrees with Israel boarding that boat. When that's the case, those soldiers have every right to defend themselves. Now if Israel would just take Iran's nuclear capabilities, I'd be even happier. On a side note, North Korea sank a South Korean vessel not too long ago without provocation. Where was this outcry then? Apparently some people only get upset when it's The US or Israel that's involved.
