do you usually use patterns, crowe? i know how to crochet but have pretty much limited myself to hats and socks. how easy is it to figure out?
My specialty I don't limit myself to pattens. I'll use one if I can find one, but if I can't then I make it up as I go. It's a lot of trial and error and pulling rows apart. Its not very hard to figure out once you understand the concept of increasing and decreasing. You have to look at things as basic shapes. It also helps to know basic sewing stitches to sew parts together. I'm apart of a bunch of crochet groups, follow a lot of blogs, and I google the hell out of the terms. You'd be surprised by how large the crochet following is on the internet. I started expanding my knowledge beyond making blankets because I couldn't find a hat I wanted.
awsm, if I can learn to at least make beanies I know what my family is getting for Christmas... teehee! I can't believe I didn't check youtube about this sooner, I've learned so much on there lol

how long does it take you to make one monkey or doll? i'd like to have a mario mushroom that must take some serious skill to give them such detailed shape
Depends on how big it is. The monkeys took me a while because I kept on adding things to make it better. It can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 weeks.
