Why is Army so bad now? Why is Military so bad in general? I just got out of the Navy and am joining the Army. My sister is a Marine. We're setting our selves up for life here. Free bachelors degree, paid housing, competitive pay, pride, honor, 3 hot meals and a place to sleep alone is more than anything in the civilian sector can guarantee you. Free health care for life and our children's lives. Is it so wrong to risk your life for something more than yourself? I just increased my chances of dying by 9 times joining the Army over the Navy, and something like 30 times over being a civilian. Is it worth it? Damn skippy it is. So while I can understand one's personal opinion on going to college and getting a degree. Some people don't have that opinion or dedication or self motivation. Things which are taught in military life. So don't go telling someone to do or not do something because you don't believe it is in your own best interest, encourage them to look at alternatives and do what they believe is best for them. *EDIT* I forgot to post on the original idea of this thread. My opinion of after high school, and what I will encourage my children to do is take a year to themselves. Work and live and pay rent to the family or move out sorta thing, or go to college and see if you like it. Or join military right away. Though I thoroughly recommend just doing what you want for a year. See what it's like to survive on your own, see what college is like see what the world can offer and take away. If your not sure what you want to do after that? Join the Armed Forces. It will give you direction and money and you can see the world abroad. At the end of 4 years, you have college money and job training, do with it as you will.
well you made it seem like you were directing the comment at me considering you were quoting me. and what issues do I have "chief"?
A friend of mine recently joined the army and is finishing up boot camp. He is in it to get as much as he can while inside the military and when out (gi bill, possible government jobs, etc). Those are his reasons, don't join the army because it is the thing to od. Also, uh, some of you guys really need to take a step back and calm the fuck down.
I didn't mean to come off as "Military=BAD". Serving this Country an honor and very admirable to say the least. I just have a bias towards the USAF rather than the other branches of service. Not saying they're bad but just my opinion favors the Air Force. For some the military is a good fit. For some it's not. I come from a military family so for me it probably would have been ok. If it does work out for a person, hell yes there are great benefits like those you listed and also pension. Retiring after 30 years and drawing a 75% of base pay (avg of past 3 years base pay) the rest of your life is great. Or even after 20 and pulling 50% base (avg last 2 years).
It's these comments that make you seem not just single branched bias but anti-military. Gung ho shit? Some people like that... I know if you hand me a M249 SAW and a M40A3, Heads will fucking roll. But give me a laptop and some Crypto, I'll pick you up the nearest encoded radio wave signal too. Also, they Marines have a saying; "No matter your job, your always a rifleman." So yes, they will hand you a rifle and tell you to kill, but your also expected to perform you job (Assigned Duty, MOS). As for Army, well it's an organism all of it's own, so while in the same neighborhood as the USMC, everyone needs to be performing their jobs or people start dying, a lot. I'm not trying to dissuade your branch bias... everyone has that. Just to realize that some language, some words, cause certain thoughts to pop into heads and can be used to persuade people.
Right, I understand. What I said was directed at a guy from a techie type site that was looking to go either military or college. I just figured the AF, being heavily into technology, would be the best fit while offering the same benifets as all the other branches. If this was a different type of site I would have suggested the branch that best aligned with his/her obvious interests.
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things i have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.
as much as I believe that the government are a bunch of liars and i'm sure there is an awful lot of stuff that is covered up and what not, i think it's pretty obvious that there are terrorists out there. come on, look at the world. it's human nature, it seems, to be violent and hate other people. so of course there are terrorists. now, whether or not 9-11 was committed by terrorists from another country...that's a whole other conspiracy and subject matter entirely.
Look, you seem to be an alright guy and I really don't feel like getting into it with you. The quote wasn't meant as a slam against you considering it wasn't even about you. I think that, like Ali said, you need to take a step back and relax before getting all defensive. I'm really not. Word, doubled education benefits and everything. Proves that Congress did at least one thing right in the past 8 years. Quoting to prove that I was right. (Or is that too high horse?)
going back to the original topic...i had one option coming out of high school and that was to continue on in my education. my parents didn't have any other choices for me. I had to get my college degree. that said, i'm on the fence about the military. personally i'm against it because i believe it takes away a lot of your independence/self identity. however, i have friends in the military and it has done them a world of good. it's given them the discipline they needed in life. i have a friend in the coast guard who went from graduating high school and doing nothing in his life, to being a medic who teaches classes now. the coast guard paid for all of his education and has really helped him along in life. i think it's a choice you need to sit down and discuss with your family, because in the end it will affect your entire family. if you feel you lack discipline/direction in your life, then go for the military as it probably would do you some good in the long run. if you don't want to join a branch of the military that gets sent overseas, go for the coast guard. hans i'm sure could give you some great advice on it and the pros/cons of joining. good luck to you in whatever you choose to do and congrats on completing high school
Dont be soo quick to dismiss someone else thought or feelings about particular thing. Just because its mix with some thing that may not be 100 percent correct. Every one has there own reasons to join. Some join for revenge, some think its honorable, some just want some thing set in life or some want to be strong etc etc... As for your friend when he join he should have known that could happen. There are no guarantee that they will not send you out in fields; even if someone just join to study and do desk work. Its unfortunate that those who dont want to fight are sent out in combat zones. But that is just some thing any one who join armed forces should always be ready for. Loosing units of your team is unpleasant but its part of work. As for brainwashed part. A man in war experience and do many things. Its not very easily justifiable. Some time the only thing you can do is find a reason that satisfies you, to realize what you seen and done had a reason or purpose. I am glad he hasnt taken any life. For some people its a very heavy burden to bare. Individual who arent properly train mentally, need to hold on to some thing sub consciously so they can live a normal life when they come back. Terrorism. Its a very vague word. Almost every day its definition changed in army. I am sure its same for other levels of armed forces. But terrorism exist. Its mostly based on prospect. Some one we call terrorist is someone's freedom fighter. Its also true some time Govt use that word for its own advantage. Labeling a region by saying some one hiding there who is a Terrorist gives them the right to go in. But that just part of the game using what you can to your advantage for one reason or another.
wow. i was getting more and more pissed as i read thru this thread, and then... it really took a turn for the awesome. You need a new dictionary woman.
Are you married? Oh wait, i am......................there goes that idea :-D. A lot of what she says has merit guys. it's not paranoia, when they really are out to get you. right Gig?
So it's black or white with you. Either you believe the government is corrupt and you wear a tin foil hat, or your in league with the government and believe everything is alright because govey knows best? Bullshit. I work my ass off everyday for this country and this government. I think it's corrupt, unstable and ought to be rewritten from the ground up as our forefathers stipulated it can and should be. I bet you also believe UFOs abduct people on a regular basis and Anna Nichol married for love, right? *EDIT* What do you read? Cosmopolitan and newsweek? You haven't stated a clear reason or fact other than a friend of yours was disenfranchised in his belief in the Army. Just blathered on about BS until you didn't have any other sentence fragments to not form... If you were well read you would have formed a thought, a thesis, an argument... SOMETHING Also, you should have no say in our voting process, political affairs, Canadian. Naturalize, then you can talk as if the government is out to get you.
Your telling him not to join the US Army based on a friend's experience in it. Your talking about MY US Army, and MY US Government as a Canadian citizen, you have no license to opinion in the matter is what I'm saying. Government control the people? Really? That's kinda the idea. If your really Anti-Government then your pro-chaos, because not once have you put forth another idea on reform or an idea on the betterment of society.
Yes, leave it at that, everyone's opinion is of equal merit and value no matter what. </sarcasm> It's the one's who think they are educated, and are... just enough... to cause the real problems. When reading and opinions fix the world, let me know and I'll put down my gun and sword. Until then I'll do something more than sit on my ass and complain about the state of things. Thedarkseed out.
