From 23 miles (120K feet). The old record set in 1960 by Joe Kittinger is 103K, or ~ 19 miles-- the edge of space.

"[Felix] Baumgartner will be carried skyward inside a pressurized capsule . . .
. . . weighing 2,900 pounds — a little more than a Volkswagen beetle — which will be carried by a massive, helium-filled balloon to an altitude of 23 miles near Roswell, N.M. The trip will take up to three hours, and temperatures will fall as low as minus 70 degrees."

    Thus the blurb.

Gitcha mind outa the gutta fa once.

From that height it must take forever to float back that first 25K feet, then it prolly gets warm.

My big fear, though, is that on the way up there, the guy just doesn't stop and just keeps floating right on out into outer space. I mean John Carmack or somebody can go get the dude, right?

I saw Baumgartner and didn't read the rest. My attention span is pretty limited :)

At that altitude, what's going to be attempted, may just hold a multitude of unintended consequences. We'll know afterwards.

JUMP DELAYED:The attempt by Felix Baumgartner to set the world’s free-fall record at 23 miles has been postponed from Monday to Tuesday because of a cold front with gusty winds near Roswell, N.M.

Nowadays, it's easier to send one's iphone or Powershot A570 to get that "been to the edge of space" feeling.

True enough. The human experience is vanishing in favor of sending silicon to do it.

Can't really understand his radio transmissions. Sounds like he has marbles in his mouth.

    ... and, he's down. Success.
