"An off-road truck plowed into a crowd and scattered "bodies everywhere" moments after sailing off a jump at a California race Saturday, killing eight people and leaving 12 injured, authorities and witnesses said."

I have to question the intelligence of the people attending the event. If you haven't seen the video of this watch it... it doesn't show the actual impact(s) really, but you get a sense of how fast the vehicles are going and how CLOSE the crowd is.

The most interesting tidbit: "Officials said the driver wasn't hurt but had to flee the scene to escape angry spectators."

Must have been complete chaos... Good vibes to the families of these poor people.

It sucks that such a thing happened, but to be frank, standing right on the course is part of the fun for the specators, everyone knows it is dangerous and should accept that kind of risk when they attend such an event.

I meant to post about this, we have some off-road enthusiasts out there and wondered if any were at the event.

I wasn't there. Not really into the trophy/baja truck scene. Socks for those people though.

I've seen videos of in truck footage of last years Baja 2000 race where this guy was doing 100+ mph through thick dust. When the dust cleared he was within 2-3 feet of the crowd on the right and he was like "Holy Shit I almost hit those people!"

Yeah not the smartest place to be at that kind of race.

In a bit of morbid irony, the drivers name is "Brett Sloppy" and he worked for "misery motorsports", a car customization business.

In doing a little research, it seems that historically in similar situations, the driver is normally charged with involuntary manslaughter but police have said they will not charge him. I guess its because this was a sanctioned event and everyone was there willingly (they weren't street racing). If anything, I think the owners of the track could be charged for gross negligence.

Its sad, But i find it hard to be sympathetic to the idiots standing on the outside of a corner right after a jump at a off road racing event.

And the driver didn't have to flea the scene, Thats just a media lie.

    It is BLM land.

I know some guys who know some guys who were there. Basically at these races you are on your own, they cant set up barriers through several hundred miles of open desert. You should be in a spot where if a truck loses control it wont end up on top of you. The scene reminded me of "zoo road" along many of the baja races. People get killed on these frequently and you can see why.

Here is a video I found real quick:

yea ive always not cared for the people that jump out to take pics, or stand arms length away from a drifting auto in these races.
i feel sorry for the families, but not for the ones that put themselves in that danger and risk.
