Anyone ever build a NAS using FreeNAS? I've got an old dell mb and intel cpu I was thinking about using. This is what i was thinking about using http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219033 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151242 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124028 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820244074 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835200054
Yeah, I used it for a while. I had an old Dell D600 laptop for the processing, and a few USB drives for storage. Not sure what exactly the problem was but it was unreliable as hell. The software is great though, so simple to use.
what are you using now, I'm looking to put my media/ media server on a separate box downstairs on my rack. Maybe just build a file server? edit Storage Server 2008?
I'd suggest going with whatever you are most comfortable with. I'm a Windows Sys Engineer so that's what I went with. I've previously run OpenFiler which is linux based. In the end it was more of a pain in the ass then it was worth - for me at least.
^^^ Yeah, I'm with him. I've fallen back and at present using a combination of Windows file sharing and the NAS functionality built into my Asus router. Next phase I'll probably put in a Windows server. Newegg has HP, Acer, and Asus models between $400-500 with the OS and OS drive preloaded. My buddy has one and Windows Home Server is pretty bad ass. He was able to do a full system restore of one of the PCs on his network, OS and all, from the backups on the server. Installed a replacement hard drive, inserted the boot disc the server created, and it reimaged itself from the server in less than an hour. BAD ASS!
I use a FreeNas box and have a couple clients that do also. I have found them to be pretty reliable, but a little slow for shares. It is pretty easy to setup and can do a lot of cool things.
