Did I miss the thread on the 7.0 earthquake that pretty much leveled Port Au Prince, Haiti? The damage is insane. Make sure to watch the slideshow. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34829978/ns/world_news-haiti_earthquake/
Having been to the island I can tell you that it was a disaster before the quake. If anything the quake will wipe some of the shit off the map so they can make a fresh start. Poor + French speaking + black = bad. Not being racist with that remark, it's just that most countries in the Caribbean share the first part of that (poor), but the French speaking and African parts make them stand apart and not meld particularly well with their Spanish speaking neighbors. The Dominican Republic on the other side of the island is 3rd world, but seems pretty fantastic compared to Haiti.
lol This is terrible. The country was so poor and had so many problems to start with they are going to take forever to rebuild what little they had.
One of my friends from Haiti found out about the earthquake while at work last night he immediately left and still has no contact with his parents, sister, or brother.
Sorry I didn't mean your comment was terrible, I meant their situation is. Actually your comment is terrible.
Yeah, no matter how to approach it sounds pretty terrible. It's the reality though, they look and sound different than their neighbors, which has an isolating effect. They're estimating 100,000+ dead at this point, I wonder how on Earth they could make any estimates at already? I doubt they even had accurate census data.
In 2008 the country was hit by 4 hurricanes in two weeks, and now this. That would be rough for a developed nation, we are talking about one of the poorest nations on earth here... going to be hard to rebound from this one any time soon. Lame. Edit: Turns out the earthquake was their own fault: What a fucking idiot. Edit 2: Another good one: Anyone got any other amusing reactions to this?
Neither Robertson nor Limbaugh should ever be quoted, it's bad enough anybody listens to them at all.
Reguardless of how poor, how well they fit in with societal norms or how much they have to offer other people, these poor folks feel the same things you and I'd feel if we were in the same situation.
I agree the world would be a better place if they were 100% ignored, but as long as they have millions of listeners/viewers/followers, we are better served exposing exactly what kind of crap they are spewing. And I second what wiskas said.
Exactly. Crowe and CH, I hope your friends end up being safe. I can't even imagine what it's like to go through this kind of experience.
The BBC was playing back some audio this morning, I cried all the way to work. Here's a link to the Red Cross site if anybody cares to donate. There are links for blood and time donation too if you can't spare any cash: http://www.redcross.org/
I know what you mean MSP. All last night while watching the news I was completely choked up. Took all my effort to not let out the water works... My ex GF is helping organize a task force with world-vision to go to Haiti with food, clothes, medical care, etc... She went last June to help an orphanage in Port-au-Prince. She told me the building where the kids lived was leveled and most of the children are missing... She's been a wreck...
You can also donate by text message by either texting "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross or to "20222" to donate $10 to Former President Clinton's foundation. Edit: Olbermann response to Limbaugh and Robertson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPoWOw8Jm5w
See, it's hilarious, over the top, but essentially true, rants like that which make me enjoy the political theater Olbermann presents. ...And why he is not in the same as people like Limbaugh. Isn't helping supposed to be the American response to the worlds problems? Isn't that what is supposed to make America different, and better?
I dunno, right or not I still don't like that sensationalized, editorialized style news. Chew it up and feed it to me, through a straw! Reminds me of the news from V For Vendetta. Save the editorial for the pundits and guests, it's undignified for a news anchor to behave that way.
Olbermann is a pundit, right? There's no way he's objective, just like Rush, Hannity or Beck aren't. The only pundit I listen to is Jason Lewis. At least he uses his brain and isn't a total prick. http://www.jasonlewisshow.com/main.html
