Obama doesn't decide these things. There is a planned outcome to the relative chaos we see right now. i've stopped trying to make sense of our government, my uncle is a top offical in the state department and he tells me that he spends more time trying to make sense of the reports people are giving him than any actual work he does. its like once you get paid by the government all common sense goes out the window.
Not investing in this countries education will be its downfall. The dumbing down of Americans has been going on for a while now and it's affects are now starting to be noticed.

Actually no. Both trends come from the same source: Money, and the lack thereof. Demand is booming from the ranks of unemployed who want to retrain for a new career, and Governments are cutting back because the ranks of un/under-employed are eating into their tax revenue base. They HAVE NO MONEY, and CAN'T SELL BONDS like they used to, so they're strapped for cash, and would rather cut this than the police, fire, trash, and various aid programs (like unemployment, medicare, and the like). They've already cut back in many areas, which is one reason we had that huge prison riot a few weeks ago, as forcibly integrated overcrowded cellmates did just what you'd expect in a racially charged powder keg like that. (desegregation of prisoners was done by Court Order. Three cheers for Republican-vaunted "blind justice") The banks only got bailed out because of the emergency situation of the time. Currently, they are all busy bailing themselves out of the bailout. I wouldn't call what happened to Chrysler and GM as a bailout; but rather, as a contolled crash and burn using a fast-track bankruptcy. Nonetheless, all that money is out the door. It's money we didn't even have in the first place, so that we've been borrowing so prodigously that our foreign investors have started to really worry, and interest rates for T-Notes are being pushed up. Don't expect things from the Government at any level just now. State and Local governments are too cash strapped to do anything, and Obama is trying to get 50 things at once through a Congress that does one thing at a time. slowly. deliberately. at best.
Control the money....control the population. divide and rule. The big threat of socialism, communism and ways of governing that are not beneficial to capitalism are because this means of easy, efficient and effective control would be negated.

My mom retired a couple years after No Child Left Behind went into effect. She was a teacher for some 30-years when she wasn't a full time mother of her seven kids. My sister's also a teacher. They both swear it's the end of the education system as we know it. I'm sure the past before the new laws wasn't much better, but after hearing their stories I'm so glad I went to school when I did, rather than even 10 years later. When my mom talks about it, the concern is so obvious.. I've never seen her so convinced something is wrong in my life. She explains even 1st and 2nd graders are forced to fill out and study for standardized testing, even though they can barely read yet. They are neglected time for creative development, art, music... anything that can develop their imagination or social skills properly. Instead, they fill out meaningless bubbles to become bureaucratic worker bees while corporations are making money from it all. It's a big business selling and enforcing these standardized tests. It's really a scary thing to hear. I imagine even a single generation of this can cause irreparable damage to our society. Then you couple in that the current generation will lead the next, and so-on. My mom also said that once in an inteview around the time she quit, they asked what her goal as a teacher is, and she said "to create life-long learners", kids that have fun learning and are interested in the world around them, forever until the day they die. The interviewer looked at her like she was crazy. The answer he wanted was that she would deliver the highest test scores. The current system is designed to fail.
We are considering home schooling our kids. There is a group in our neighborhood that does and they all seem very happy with it. Especially with my middle son and his autism, the public school system scares me.
Smart move. My daughter was homeschooled and has done alright. The "no child left behind" program has had the desired effect. Dumbness is not an accident. My Dad's a physics professor, and says that there are very few native born Americans getting to the PhD level anymore; they're all foreign (including appropriately enough, my dad).
The only native born citizen with a Doctorate that I know of, has a Ph.D. in "Practical Theology" from a Lutheran Seminary. I won't laugh, since he had to learn both German AND Greek, as well as Latin, in his studies. He went to England to read the original texts hand-written by John Wesley (Founder of Methodism), and had the Flu the entire time he was there, sick as a dog. Nonetheless, I know there are learned folks out there. They're just buried in a sea of idiots who can't tell one who the President was during the Civil War. As for edumacation, I don't blame "No Child Gets Ahead" (it's REAL name) for our current troubles. Our edumacation system has been going downhill since before I was a teenager, when these folks started coming up with "new ideas in education" such as the "new math" which standardized (and stupidified) how one does such things as addition, multiplication, and "long division", and eliminated all the little shortcuts from before which allowed our Parents (whiskas and mine, at least) and your Grandparents to do feats of math in their head that have me reaching for my calculator. If it weren't for my love of reading OUTSIDE of School, I never would have learned to read beyond the "run Spot, run." level. (Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and Robert A. Heinlein were my best buddies. I still have a soft spot for "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel.") I want to KILL the folks who thought it was a good idea to force us to read William Faulkner's "The Bear." (blegh!) I didn't develop a love for History until well after College. High School "Social Studies" pretty much killed my interest at the time.
OMFG-- "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel" was the first Sci Fi book I ever read. I musta been in the third or fourth grade, hooked on Star Trek and the Space Race.
I just remember being in high school and having discussions with my teachers about the education system reforming and doing things to make learning/school easier. I always thought to myself that school shouldn't be easy or dumbed down to make sure the lowest common denominator passes, doing that helps no one.
