I know there are some locals here. I'm in town for a professional conference and will have some time to explore the city. Aside from the usual touristy stuff, what is there to do here?
are you here now? I work at the Columbia Tower in Seattle. ya like fiddy says, the weather sucks. freakin cold and it snowed over the weekend (although it's melted in most places).
I fly out Wednesday night at 10:45 I'm here right now, but am at the conference most of the day. I've been to the park by the Space Needle and plan on going back for the EMP Wednesday morning. I've seen Pike Place and walked down by the Waterfront. I've explored pretty much all of the shopping in the downtown corner and spent an hour or so walking around and photographing the public library. I might take tomorrow afternoon off to go check out the Art Museum. The weather's not that bad. I was expecting to be stuck with grey skies and rain for my entire visit, but it's been pretty nice.
Get out of downtown and hit the parks: Hit up Discovery Park (Both the waterfront and the forest sections): http://www.cityofseattle.net/Parks/environment/discovparkindex.htm Gasworks Park is great for photography: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/park_detail.asp?id=293 Volunteer Park is great, go up the water tower for a great 360 view of Seattle, and check out the Conservatory for great plant life: http://www.seattle.gov/PARKS/park_detail.asp?id=399 But as far as non park things go, the Ballard area is pretty cool, and you see the Ballard Locks there. (doh, that's another park) http://www.nws.usace.army.mil/PublicMenu/Menu.cfm?sitename=lwsc&pagename=mainpage Um, the Fremont neighborhood is cool: http://www.fremontseattle.com/ It has the Fremont Troll (under the Auroa bridge), a famous Lenin statue, the Rocket ship, and so on. Hmm, what else....
well if you have some time, stop by the columbia tower. we could possible do lunch or somethin. maybe 950 could come too if the timing worked. why do you hate going to seattle, seven?
You hate Seattle but like Wenatchee? Wenatchee is only good for meth smoking and migrant farm work...
i was going to say volunteer park, but fiddy beat me to it! i'm around as well after 4pm if you guys wanna meet up. if you wanna walk somewhere that isn't downtown, you can go up to capital hill (right across I5). 950 gave you all the suggestions i'd give.
Thanks for all of the suggestions, friends; I'll see how many of those places I can make my way to before I take off. If I had planned this trip and organized my free time a little bit better, it would have been nice to meet some of you, but unfortunately, I don't think that's going to happen.
Well if you are short on time, here is what I recommend: Start at Gasworks Park, walk a few blocks west to the Fremont neighborhood, Ballard and the Locks are just a bit west of that, and Discovery Park is on the other side of the locks from Ballard, just go a bit further west. They are all pretty close to each other.
that gaspark is badass looking i just found that there is a hiking park going through the hills i live in <5mins walk away. i'm trying to convince the girlfriend to hang around an extra day and go on saturday
Gasworks Park is very cool. It is just north of downtown, on the other end of Lake Union, so it offers a great view of the city, day or night. That hill with the paths is a popular place for kite flying, to the east just out of the picture is a ton more machinery you can climb on and around, and there is a big playground too. It is the best place to watch the 4th of July fireworks from as well.
Thank you for this thread I'm spending a few days (fri-mon) in Seattle visiting a friend this weekend and was wondering what might be neater than others - i think that gasworks would be the awesomest!
The trip was alright, although I spent more time in the conference center and downtown than I would have liked. I'll probably be back another time when I have more time for leisure. I bought these while I was there: overstock sale meant I got the set for less than half of what the 8" chef's knife regularly goes for.
