Hey man! I just seen a link that made me think of you. It's a funeral somewhere near you from what I hear, for a 90+ year old veteran that passed away. He has no family or friends, and the funeral home is asking for people to gather and honor this man's sacrifice so he isn't laid to rest alone. I can only hope that if I were in his shoes that people would do the same for me!

And thou, who mindful of the unhonour'd Dead
Dost in these Notes thy artless Tale relate
By Night & lonely contemplation led
To linger in the gloomy Walks of Fate
Hark how the sacred Calm, that broods around
Bids ev'ry fierce tumultous Passion ease
In still small Accents whisp'ring from the Ground
A grateful Earnest of eternal Peace
    No more with Reason & thyself at strife;
Give anxious Cares & endless Wishes room
But thro' the cool sequester'd Vale of Life
Pursue the silent Tenour of thy Doom.

That's being held in the Eagle Point Natl. Cemetary.
Funny thing, nobody in this liberal town gave two shitz about that old man or his contribution until someone put it on social media. At this time in history, you have to go viral to be of worth.
My wife volunteers at the Camp White VA Domiciliary close to there. There are hundreds of cases just like this fallen hero.

Better late than never I guess, but that's too bad. I wondered if maybe the guy was a dick, but the story said the funeral director thought he was pretty cool.

Give your wife a big hug.

Nope, he was fairly well known and not a dick. Just an old vet that suffered from being a vet. No family known.
There are hundreds just like him growing to old age right this minute. And that's just in this local area.
As far as the VA is concerned, it's normal and always has been. These are the issues that we, as a nation, need to be having a 'conversation' about.
It's as though most US citizens used these guys and gals, got what they had to offer, then discarded them. It's downright shameful.

Vets issues are getting some traction in our Senate race this year. The dem, Kander, is a combat vet, but is moderate on a lot of other issues, which damn near makes him a commie in Missouri. Blunt's record on vet issues is poor, but he's getting a lot of NRA money. (Kander is the guy in Smersh's post with the vid of the candidate assembling an assault rifle blindfolded.)

This is one of those rare issues that lends itself to consensus, but I'll believe it when I see it.

It's been a chronic back-burner issue since before the Viet Nam era. A lot of politicians have spouted words about doling something for the vets only to have the can kicked down the road
for decades. Meanwhile, not only mental health care for vets has been eliminated, but mental health care for everyone else has been. How does this happen? These issues get drownded out by the noise of shit like Hilary's lies and the Donalds foul mouth. While we're busy being inundated by media frenzies, the real issues are being swept under the carpet and hidden.

Can we talk about soldier worship?

We can have a conversation about anything. But talking won't change one thing.

I prefer conversations about wine worship and whiskey worship.

Well if a majority of people start talking about how we should be putting more money into the VA and PTSD treatment for vets rather than trotting out active duty members at every sports event and referring to all soldiers and seaman as heroes maybe things will change.
