A buddy of mine is a car nut, has owned all sort of exotics. And he was giving me hell the other day because I wasn't rev matching. "It'll cause wear and tear on your clutch and drive train!" From what I've read so far it's mostly a personal preference, and that unless you're dropping down to 2nd at 60mph and that sort of nonsense that the whole "wear and tear" thing is basically myth. Whatcha think?
Always... It's part of driving smooth Maybe if you have a low hp/tq beater, it's not as big of a concern, but the clutch on a Carrera GT for example is like $20,000, a Porsche GT3 it's $3000. It's hard on everything if you don't rev match, the flywheel, clutch disc/p.plate, even the engine and motor mounts since it takes a sudden shunt everytime you release the clutch and force the RPMs of the engine to match the drivetrain. If you rev match it's smoother for everything.
Well yeah, that GT3 clutch is about as expensive as my whole car! But yeah, I'm playing around with it now. In the upper gears I'm finding the increase in RPMs downshifting is negligible. For gears 1-3 it helps, and is certainly easy enough. With practice it'll be fun.
Yep you're right, I think 5th to 4th or 4 to 3 is the most fun downshift. It takes a lot of time to get good at it. Eventually you can do it while braking, heel-toe
I have one of those no HP rigs. It's smoother to match it up on DS. I do it more for the smoothness rather than the worry of wasting clutch lining. But.... if I had one of those Porches....you bet your bum I'd be watching out for every nanometer of wear.
eh, ~100HP ranger, when i downshift, the engine goes from a ~1000RPM idle up to maybe 1500RPM(no tach, haven't run calculations to be 100%), the amount of clutch material burned away doing that is probably pretty insignficant.
I guess I'm a freak, but I kinda like things jerky. Not to mention downshifting quickly with a tailgater behind is always good for a laugh.
Always revmatch. Watch the tach when you shift, both up and down, compare it with speed and you'll know exactly how high to rev it to get it to match. At 40mph in 3rd the car is at 3200rpm. At 40mph in 2nd, it's at 4000. So rev to 4000rpm, drop into 2nd and let the clutch out. A little feather of the throttle right as it goes into gear makes it extra smooth
Rev matching is the hardest part of driving a car you're not used to. I usually don't have to rev match when upshifting I just let the RPM's fall to where they're going to be and release.
what is the proper way of rev matching anyways? is it clutch in, to neutral, rev, then lower gear then clutch out? i just give it a little gas with the clutch all the way in when i downshift so its smoother, but yeah idk how to revmatch.. hell half of my friend's seem to not even put the clutch pedal in, they say its a waste of time and just do it with it half engaged, but they say "its engaged" i let him drive my car and he was grinding my gears -___-

So I've been rev matching for about a month, it's pretty habit forming. And easy enough. But I should probably stop. I'm looking for an excuse to upgrade the clutch and flywheel.
If you're doing it right, it would work the opposite way of what you said. Rev matching increases clutch life.
